‘Jeopardy!’: Dr. Oz Starts Hosting Gig Using Alex Trebek to Win Over Audience — And It Didn’t Work

The recent passing of television legend Alex Trebek has thrown showrunners of Jeopardy! for a loop, forcing them to bring in a variety of guest hosts to fill Trebek’s host spot. As various celebrity guest hosts step up to the plate on Jeopardy! a few of them are becoming more popular with fans than others.

The host who is making waves with the fandom in recent days is Dr. Mehmet Oz, a rather controversial daytime talk show host and cardiothoracic surgeon. While Oz has his own unique following and came out of the gate trying to impress Jeopardy! fans, many viewers are not impressed with him, or his work as host.

Dr. Oz has been a pop culture mainstay for well over two decades, appearing on several daytime talk shows until he eventually landed his own program in 2009.

On The Dr. Oz Show, Oz discusses popular health and fitness topics of the day, including methods to improve personal well-being and longevity. Oz has ended up in a number of controversies over the years, with critics slamming him for promoting pseudoscience and false medical claims.

Still, Dr. Oz has his fanbase — and Jeopardy! showrunners recently brought him on board to host the show for two weeks, as part of their ongoing celebrity guest host series. Unfortunately, Oz’s first days on the set did not go so smoothly, and the nostalgic way that he tried to get in touch with fans rubbed more than a few people the wrong way.

During the first minutes of his first episode as guest host, Dr. Oz spoke to the viewers at home, stating: “I was so fortunate to become friends with Alex, and I visited him and this show as often as I could. One of my favorite memories was of Alex showing me, with immense pride, a room full of letters and support for him from you, from his fans. And of all of his achievements, he was most proud of his connection with all of you at home.”

In spite of Oz’s heartfelt words spotlighting his connection to Trebek, fans were not happy with the show — or with the choice of Oz as host. Many viewers took to social media to express their extreme disapproval of the show.

Well before Dr. Oz started guest-hosting Jeopardy! fans expressed their outrage with showrunners who chose the controversial doctor. There was even a “#BoycottJeopardy” hashtag circulating on Twitter for a while, with many fans claiming that they would not be watching the show as long as Oz was hosting.

Things did not get better after Oz started hosting, with one fan writing on Twitter: “For the first time in literally decades I will not be watching #Jeopardy I never thought Jeopardy would chase me away as a viewer but here we are.”

Another Twitter user wrote, “the first two weeks of #Jeopardy I’m taking a pass on since Alex. Dr. Oz is a charlatan and not worthy of the hosting spot. See you again in a few.”

Multiple other fans chimed in, with many claiming that Oz is a “snake oil salesman” and is not deserving to take up Trebek’s mantle.

With no real response from Jeopardy! showrunners as of yet, it looks as though viewers will have to stick it out until Oz’s guest stint is up — or simply change the channel.
