Jessa Duggar’s Birthday Gifts to Her 5-Year-Old Son Include Socks and a Hammer

Jessa Duggar and her husband, Ben Seewald, are featured heavily on TLC’s Counting On. But the couple also has their own YouTube that Jessa utilizes to give fans an inside look into her home life.

Recently, she posted a video celebrating her son’s birthday. Spurgeon Seewald just turned 5, and he got plenty of gifts for his special day — though it seems some of the presents were out of the ordinary. Here’s what he received.

While many parents celebrate their kids’ birthdays on just one day, Jessa and Ben have a different method. They choose to give their kids one gift each day leading up to the big day.

“This year we decided to change things up — instead of opening all his gifts at once, we decided to start the week before his birthday and give one gift a day so he would have time to appreciate and really enjoy each one,” Jessa explained via Instagram in February. “This was so fun, I think we might turn it into a new tradition!”

She explained this once again in her birthday video for Spurgeon she posted to YouTube on Nov. 6. “Mommy and Daddy got Spurge several fun gifts,” Jessa explained. “So, today, Spurgeon gets to open up his first gifts. Leading up to Spurgeon’s birthday, we’re gonna have one or two things each day that he gets to unwrap.”

Jessa gave her son, Spurgeon, gifts ranging from socks to a hammer

Jessa and Ben aren’t conventional gift givers, it seems. While a typical 5-year-old may receive plenty of toys, such isn’t the case for Spurgeon. His first gift was a pair of white shoes just like Ben’s. And his second gift was an identical jacket to Ben’s, which he seemed to adore.

The next few days, Spurgeon received even more clothing items. Jessa and Ben got him a beanie to wear in the winter, which he also seemed to love. And he later received socks. “It’s my own socks,” Spurgeon said.

“Your very own!” Jessa noted.

Spurgeon got more than just clothing. He also received a hammer with his name on the side as well as nails. “Wow, you can build something right now!” Jessa excitedly told him.

Ben then went over the rules with the hammer with Spurgeon. And the child went right outside to start “building.”

She noted they’d be having a party at Spurgeon’s grandma’s house, too

Not only does Spurgeon get plenty of gifts, but it looks like he also gets a party. Toward the end of the video, Jessa talked to Spurgeon while on camera. And she mentioned Spurgeon was also getting a party at “Granny’s house” — though it’s unclear whether the party would take place at Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s place or with Ben’s side of the family.

“What are we gonna do at Granny’s house tonight?” Jessa asked her son.

“We’re gonna have a little party,” Spurgeon answered.

“It’s your party, it’s your birthday,” Jessa laughed. And she then noted they’d be eating some ice cream later for sure.

We’re glad Spurgeon seemed to enjoy his birthday and all of the gifts he received (no matter how unconventional they may seem to others).
