Counting On stars Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald recently welcomed a baby girl they named Ivy Jane, but she is going to have to share her May 26th birthday with another member of the Duggar family – her great-grandma Mary. On the Duggar’s official Facebook page, the family wrote that “May 26th is one of our very favorite days!” because it was Jim Bob’s mom’s birthday, but they kept Jessa’s baby news a secret until the mom-of-three was ready to introduce her daughter to the world.
Jessa Duggar gave birth to Ivy Jane at home
Two days after giving birth, Jessa shared the news with her fans on Instagram that Ivy Jane had arrived by posting a picture of her baby girl wearing a pink onesie and a gray headband. On the family blog, they revealed that Jessa’s water broke when she was getting ready for church, and after she labored for three-and-a-half hours at home, Ivy Jane arrived at 5:57 p.m.
The newest grand-Duggar weighed in at seven pounds, 14 ounces, and is 20.5 inches long.
Ivy Jane arrived earlier than expected
Jessa also revealed that she wasn’t due until June 5th, and since she had delivered five days late with her first two pregnancies, she wasn’t expecting Ivy to show up so soon.
“We were so surprised when she came two weeks earlier than her brothers. We definitely weren’t expecting that!” wrote the proud parents in a statement.
The couple also told fans that they were surprised at how small Ivy Jane is, as Jessa’s first two babies – Spurgeon and Henry – each weighed between nine and ten pounds when they were born.
“She feels so tiny compared to her siblings!” wrote the couple. “We’re so grateful to God for this precious gift. She is already so loved. Her big brothers adore her!”
Grandma Mary and Ivy Jane are the first members of the Duggar family to share a birthday
Even though the Duggar’s have dozens of family members, May 26th marks the first time two members of the family share a birthday, with the exception of the two sets of twins: John-David and Jana and Jedidiah and Jeremiah.
When you add together Jim Bob, Michelle, their 19 children, eight daughters and sons-in-law, and 13 grandchildren, that comes to 42 members in the family. With 365 days in a year, you might not think that it’s likely two members of the family would share a birthday.
But, as In Touch Weekly points out, the birthday paradox states that when there are 23 people together in one room, there is a 50 percent chance that two of them share a birthday.
Even if you leave out the two sets of twins in the family, the odds were that a shared birthday was coming. And, chances are it will happen again since four more Duggar babies already on the way, eight married couples are procreating at an exponential rate, and there are still 11 kids in the family who will most likely one day get married and have even more kids.
In the coming years, this family is going to be celebrating a birthday or anniversary just about every day. And some of those days will feature multiple celebrations.
Ivy Jane’s birthday is also Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth’s anniversary
When the family celebrated Grandma Mary’s birthday with a post on Facebook, they also mentioned that it was Joy-Anna Duggar and Austin Forsyth’s second wedding anniversary. The couple already has a son named Gideon, who turned one in February, and they recently announced that they are expecting their second child this November.
Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwell (who got engaged at Joy-Anna and Austin’s wedding) are also expecting baby number two this fall, Josh and Anna Duggar have announced that baby number six is on the way, and Josiah Duggar and Lauren Swanson are pregnant again after suffering a miscarriage last October.
When Counting On returns to TLC later this year, fans are going to have to work hard to keep up with all of the new cast members, including Ivy Jane.
