Compared to many others, the Duggars seem like quite the odd family. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar first attained fame for their Christian fundamentalist views and huge family (they ended up having 19 children total). And while all eyes were on them for years, their children are growing up fast and attaining their own fan base thanks to programs like Counting On.
Daughter Jill Duggar may no longer be on the show, but there’s no doubt her marriage to controversial husband Derick Dillard continues to raise eyebrows online. And fans have seemed to notice one behavior the two engage in during their date nights. Here’s why Jill’s getting slammed and what she’s had to say about it.
Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard have been under a spotlight since they were kicked off of Counting On
The Dillards have become everyone’s favorite couple to criticize, and it all seemed to come to a head when Derick had him and Jill removed from Counting On. It all started when Derick unleashed a series of transphobic tweets against fellow TLC star Jazz Jennings, and it seems he didn’t stop there, either. He also had a few homophobic comments for stars Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent. When TLC caught wind of Derick’s social media activity, they announced he would no longer be affiliated with Counting On — though now, of course, Derick insists he actually quit the show.
After the backlash from the network and fans, Jill attempted to make peace in her own way with her fans. To Instagram, she posted, “To disagree doesn’t = hate, or judgement … Love doesn’t always = approval … You can be friends with, love and care for people you don’t agree with 100%.” It seems her fans still weren’t happy with this post, however, as many wished Derick would apologize for what he posted online.
Fans have criticized Jill for sitting next to Derick when they go out to eat
It’s not just Derick’s Twitter activity that’s gotten the public’s attention, either. Many fans have since taken to Jill and Derick’s social media accounts to question some of their date night activities. And one post from Jill’s Instagram really set a few of her followers off. In the comments section of this post, one of her followers asked, “Why are you sitting next to Derrick instead of across from?” It seems many others also had the same question, as the post has 17 likes.
Fans will surely notice the side-sitting at restaurants isn’t new for the Dillards, either. Jill has posted photos of her sitting next to Derick in restaurants on many other occasions. Even worse for some fans was seeing Jill sit in on Derick’s law school classes, too, as they wondered if the two had separation anxiety or if Jill was just incredibly clingy. As one fan commented on this Instagram post, “She goes to ‘work’ with you? I just died.”
Jill has her own explanation for her behavior
Jill rarely fires back at her fans no matter how nasty or pointed their comments may be — but it seems she couldn’t help herself in this instance. And she actually gave quite a sweet explanation as to why she chooses to sit next to Derick during the date nights instead of across from him. “[W]e ALWAYS do!! We prefer to sit next to each other vs. with the whole table between us….idk…just too much distance when we sit across from each other…lol,” Jill commented back to the original Instagram user.
For as many negative comments as Jill and Derick may receive, they still have plenty of fans who think they’re adorable and wish they were still on TV, too. One of her followers backed up her comment with, “Aww, I love this! My husband and I have been married for almost 3 years and we, too, always sit on the same side of the booth when go out on our date nights! We don’t care what anyone thinks.”
