Jill Duggar’s Followers Are Extremely Bothered by How She’s Homeschooling Her Children

Since they first started making regular appearances on our TV screens over a decade ago, the Duggars have been a controversial bunch. We first started following Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar when Michelle was still having children, but now, her eldest kids are marrying and starting families of their own. And a fan favorite is Jill Duggar — though her husband, Derick Dillard, has caused serious controversy in the past. While neither of them are appearing on TV anymore, fans still follow them religiously on social media.

Like any public figure, Jill’s followers have criticized her parenting heavily on Instagram. And a recent image of how she’s homeschooling her son sparked a lot of backlash. Here’s what happened.

Jill and Derick have made it clear they plan to homeschool their kids

All of the Duggars were homeschooled using ATI, or Advanced Training Institute — so it makes perfect sense that Jill would follow in her parent’s footsteps and use the same program on her own kids. In Touch Weekly explains the controversial program is a “Biblically-based home education program for families who desire to raise up sons and daughters who are ‘mighty in Spirit’ and able to impact the world for Jesus Christ.” And the curriculum itself allegedly uses “the teachings of Jesus Christ” to teach homeschooled children the basics in “linguistics, law, history, science, and medicine.”

There’s no doubt many Duggar followers take seriously issue with ATI, and some have even called the program a cult. Either way, In Touch Weekly notes Jill has been open about teaching her 3-year-old son, Israel, Bible teachings early on — and she was criticized when it looked as if she was giving him an entire bag of candy for completing his school work.

Jill recently posted a photo of her ‘car-schooling’ her son

Not only has Jill been slammed for her and Derick’s decision to teach their kids through ATI’s program, but she also posted a photo to social media that alarmed her fans. A Reddit user reposted the photo that depicts Jill in the car with Israel. Over top of the photo, Jill added text that said, “Car-schooling with Israel (Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons book).” Fans immediately wondered why she was teaching her son in the car instead of at home, and if that was really the best place to be teaching him anything at all.

Reddit users took to the thread to speculate about the photo. We know Derick Dillard attends law school, and Jill is frequently seen waiting for him to get out of class (sometimes she even goes to class with him, too). As one Reddit user wrote, “They’re probably at dericks school waiting in the car for him while he’s in class.” And another said, “I’m confused by this. Why is she doing lessons in the car? Is he old enough or ready to learn how to read? I’m worried he might set him up for failure if he doesn’t perform.”

It seems not everyone was quick to judge Jill, however. Some Reddit users actually came to her defense. As one person mentioned on the thread, “Are people actually criticizing her for starting reading lessons with him at 3? This is the least offensive thing she’s ever done lmao.”

This is far from the first time she’s been slammed for her parenting

Whether fans are for her “car-schooling” or not, Jill’s parenting has come under fire multiple times in the past — and we’re sure this incident is far from the last to garner attention, too. We can’t forget the time Jill and Derick were criticized for taking Israel to El Salvador with them while they performed missionary work, and Derick caused additional controversy when he posted on Instagram about how he was “training” the kids. Certainly their most talked-about (and criticized) parenting strategy is their use of the ATI program, however.

It’s likely Jill will continue her car-schooling and homeschooling tactics, but will her kids have the opportunity to attend college? We’ll have to wait and find out what her stance is on this.
