Jill Duggar’s Husband, Derick Dillard, Just Encouraged His Twitter Followers to Pay for College in Cash
The Duggars have been causing controversy since Jim Bob and Michelle first put their 19 kids in the reality TV spotlight. And now that their older kids are growing up, marrying their spouses, and having children of their own, there’s even more to keep track of than ever before. Jill Duggar’s been a fan favorite since the beginning, but fans certainly have opinions of her husband, Derick Dillard. The two are no longer featured on TLC’s Counting On, but they do a good job of keeping their followers in the loop via social media.
Derick has a strong following on Instagram and Twitter, and recently a tweet about paying for college in cash sparked quite a bit of attention. Here’s what he said and how his followers responded.
Derick Dillard has discussed his kids going to college multiple times on social media
We know the Duggars for their strict rules, homeschooling tactics, and of course, their dress code and courtship guidelines. And while Jill Duggar brought many of the rules she grew up with into her own home as the mother to her two sons, Samuel and Israel, she’s also breaking a few as well. Jill currently homeschools her oldest son and will continue to do so with her youngest. But when it comes to college, it seems both she and Derick are open — and even encouraging — of their kids heading to public universities.
Derick posted this Instagram photo of him and Jill with the caption, “First day of school #21 is in the books! (19 years in public school & 2 in seminary).” And when a follower asked, “Would you ever allow any of your kids to attend public schools?” Derick commented back, “yes.” Not only that, but he’s also discussed the possibility of college for his kids on other posts. And Jill’s also mentioned that she would encourage her kids to become lawyers like Derick.
He recently retweeted a post about paying for college in cash
We know the Duggars get a healthy sum of money from Counting On. But since Derick and Jill aren’t a part of the show, there’s a ton of speculation regarding how they make their money. Either way, it seems Derick’s not a fan of taking out loans, as he recently retweeted a post from author Dave Ramsey. The tweet reads, “Parents: Don’t encourage your kids to take out student loans. Help them make plans to go to a school where CASH can be paid for college.”
There are plenty of disgruntled Twitter users who had a lot to say about this post, however. “Doesn’t this perpetuate classism! This is something that sounds good in theory. But one must do a cost-benefit analysis, research suggests that an investment in the RIGHT college can lead to higher mid-career income levels!” one Twitter user commented back to the post. Another wrote, “Cash? People can barely pay their bills, much less a college student.”
Fans still aren’t sure how Derick affords law school
With this tweet in mind, it’s safe to assume Derick’s not using loans for law school. He’s currently in his second year and seems to be taking his studies seriously. As for how he and Jill afford the hefty bill, we’re still not sure — and many have questioned where the money’s coming from.
Many assume Jill is the real money-maker in the household, as her Instagram is full of sponsored content. As one Instagram user commented on Derick’s post, “his wife works all of the time. She is the breadwinner now by modeling clothes online and getting paid sponsors.” But it seems Derick’s also trying to do his part in any way he can, as he recently posted a photo of him working for the food delivery service Grubhub. “How do you make extra cash? Would love to hear in the comments below,” he asked his followers.
Aside from Jill and Derick making a living, others have suspected that Jim Bob helps with their finances. Considering the couple just moved into a brand new home and doesn’t seem to be making any cuts on how they live their lives, money somehow doesn’t appear to be an issue. And we’re guessing Jill and Derick are also already saving up for their kids’ college funds given what the tweet said!
