Joanna Gaines’ College Degree Syncs Perfectly With A New Gaines-Run TV Network
Downhome couple Chip and Joanna Gaines made their home on HGTV for five years with popular remodeling show ‘Fixer Upper’ where he built and she decorated homes that seemed beyond saving. Now that the show has ended, the hardworking duo will find themselves on a new network: Discovery. Fans of the couple will be able to tune in once again to see their home makeovers and adorable family. Moving to Discovery may introduce the Gaines family to an entirely new audience. But the move isn’t as nonsensical as it may seem because Joanna has a communications degree!
An upcoming project for the Gaineses
Although the couple recently announced their return to television on The Tonight Show, details were sparse. Chip opened up to Jimmy Fallon on the show to reveal a few things, however.
First, the couple has amassed quite a bit of knowledge from their five seasons on ‘Fixer Upper,’ which began in 2013 ended last April, and they want to use it to move forward without some of the missteps that may have caused them to stumble on the past.
Secondly, the new partnership with Discovery will allow Chip and Joanna Gaines to film around Waco, Texas, the couple’s hometown. Chip expressed excitement over being able to work on this project without having to travel extensively.
Neither of the Gaineses has been shy about their love for Waco, where they were married in 2003, or their southern roots. In fact, that southern charm is part of the reason why ‘Fixer Upper’ was so popular. If the couple can keep it up, it could serve them well for their new venture.
Finally, this new project isn’
Kinks to be worked out
If fans of Chip and Joanna Gaines aren’t quite sure what the couple has in the works, it could be that it sounds like the Gaineses aren’t quite sure yet. Chip Gains described how he and his wife, along with the Discovery network, would have to “carve out” a show that “really makes sense” for them and their family, which has grown since they left HGTV.
The couple and network executives might still be working together to figure out how exactly the Gaineses fit with Discovery and what will appease both fans of ‘Fixer Upper’ and existing Discovery viewers.
Discovery releases statement
Discovery’s own statement reveals that many of the details of this project are still in the works. However, the official statement revealed that the network was in the middle of “exclusive” talks with Chip and Joanna Gaines about this upcoming project.
The statement went on to laud the creative couple, describing them as:
true authentic storytellers and creative visionaries who will nourish millions of people with quality, family-friendly programming accessible on a 24/7 network and across all screens[.]
Although the statement is vague, the allusion to access across all screens could mean more streaming options for viewers or perhaps interactive content.
Discovery’s bold moves
Discovery is no stranger to forming perhaps surprisingly partnerships. They previously entered a joint venture with Oprah’s Oprah Winfrey Network. The result was the switch from Discovery Health Network to just Discovery. After several successful years, Discovery is now a majority owner of OWN.
So while discussing a project with Chip and Joanna Gaines might seem out of left field initially, Discovery has proven in the past that bold moves can have big payoffs.

My favorite thing about our media tour was coming to this CBS building for an interview- this was the same exact building I interned at while living in New York 16 years ago when I was interested in broadcast journalism. It was during my time in this big city that my heart shifted and I wanted to open a boutique like the ones I loved to go to in NY. Every time I stepped into one of these shops, it wasn't to buy anything bc I was broke, it was just to experience the feeling of home that I missed so much. Three years later, I married Chip and he pushed me to pursue my dream and open @magnolia the little shop on Bosque here in Waco. This week has been an amazing whirlwind. Thank you guys again and again for your support, and for being interested in our story. #fullcircle #themagnoliastory #thosehighheelshurt #ipreferflipflops
Another reason why Discovery’s choice to work with Joanna Gaines makes sense is that the interior designer and mother has a communications degree from Baylor University, from which she graduated in 2001. Joanna revealed that she had even interned at the CBS building shortly after she graduated with the intent of becoming a broadcast journalist. However, she eventually realized that the big city life wasn’t for her.
Incidentally, Chip, who is three years her senior, attended the same school to earn a marketing and business degree, but the couple wouldn’t meet until later. With Chip’s encouragement, Joanna shifted her focus to designing back in Waco despite not having a degree in design, where the couple now owns their company Magnolia.
Although the couple might seem all country and southern charm on the screen, their respective degrees might be useful when it comes to carving out the perfect niche for them on Discovery. Their skills and experience on screen ensure that whatever they do, Chip and Joanna Gaines won’t be dealing with a project that’s a “fixer-upper.”
