Joanna Gaines’ Morning Routine: How She Prepares for Every Single Day
Like most HGTV fans, we know you miss Chip and Joanna Gaines on Fixer Upper. From Joanna’s signature shiplap to Chip’s creative demolitions, the two of them knew exactly what to do to turn an old house into a family’s dream home. Though they may not be participating in the TV program any longer, they’re still renovating homes, producing cookbooks, working on the Magnolia home decor collection, running a restaurant, and raising five kids.
There’s no doubt Joanna Gaines is unbelievably busy — and we’re all wondering how she juggles her day-to-day life. Of course, it all starts with a proper morning routine. Here’s how she gets her day started.
She gets up at the same time every morning
There’s no time for lounging around when it comes to the Gaines family. Today talked to Chip and Joanna and personally asked about their routine. Chip said he gets up at 4 a.m., and Joanna claimed 6:30 a.m. was her wake-up call.
Aside from living incredibly busy lives, one of the reasons Chip gets up early is because he notes it’s the calmest, most relaxing part of his day. “That’s why I love it,” he told Today. “I get up early; sometimes read the paper, a little bit of coffee, go mess with the animals a little bit. It’s pretty therapeutic. It’s like golf to most people. Me waking up early in the morning — that’s kind of my thing.”
Joanna quickly quipped that no part of her day was calm, however.
She eats breakfast with the family
When you’re always on the go, it can be tough to connect with family and eat energizing, healthy foods. That’s why Chip and Joanna make a point to sit at the table, drink coffee, and eat together every morning. They both noted they’re avid coffee drinkers — and Joanna even said she needs “lots and lots of coffee” to begin the day. With five children to care for, we can’t say we’re surprised.
As for breakfast, it sounds like the Gaines family fuel properly every day. Joanna notes there’s always “eggs, some type of meat, and something sweet: cinnamon rolls or pancakes” on the table.
She keeps her beauty routine simple
As noted on her blog, Joanna has always liked to do her own hair and makeup even when she was filming Fixer Upper. She noted she carried around a “pretty basic little bag of makeup,” and we doubt much has changed from then to now. And a simple beauty routine means she can spend more time with her family or getting down to business.
As for what she has on her, she loves her tweezers, Revitalash Mascara, Colorescience mineral powder, Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner, a lipstick and eyeshadow from MAC, and Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets. Some of these products are available in your local drugstore, too.
Joanna ensures all of her other meals are prepped and ready to go
Staying organized is key for the Gaines family. And one way Joanna makes sure that she’s eating healthy for the rest of her day is by meal planning in the beginning of the week. She wrote on her blog that she makes a point to sit down and write out her meals so that “it makes grocery shopping and prepping dinner much easier — even when my days are full of to-do’s.”
Having meals prepped and ready also makes the mornings run smoothly. By setting aside just 30 minutes in the beginning of her week to clean and chop her veggies, she’s ready to grab them for herself and pack them in her kid’s lunches during the week.
She puts her everyday essentials in locker baskets by the door
It’s easy to forget something essential for your day when you’re busy ensuring everyone else is taken care of, so Joanna has a great tip for busy moms. According to her blog, she recommends using organizational pieces, like small locker baskets, to put your everyday essentials in. That way, before you exit your home after breakfast, you can just check the basket to make sure you’re not missing anything you may need.
Even if you don’t employ this trick, Joanna also recommends pre-packing your bag the night before. She notes that this “could save you a few minutes — and those few minutes can make all the difference in the middle of a hectic morning.”
The secret to a successful morning? Always be prepared the day before
If there’s anything to learn from the Gaines’ family schedule, it’s that they leave nothing to the last minute. From meal prepping to placing their belongings in organizational baskets to take with them the next day to packing a bag the night before, organizing the day before it even happens is key to success. Joanna notes this is particularly vital for her during back-to-school season.
The family seems to always have a back-up plan, too. On her blog, Joanna notes that some mornings, they have no time for a big family breakfast — and that’s OK. She always has a batch of healthy, fresh granola bars ready just in case their day is more hectic than usual.
