Joaquin Phoenix Uses Oscar Acceptance Speech to Give a ‘Voice to the Voiceless’

On-screen, he tells the story of the villain from the DC Universe, Joker. As an actor, however, Joaquin Phoenix often uses his platform to raise awareness regarding issues that he cares about. The Academy Awards were no exception, as he won the award for Best Actor. Here’s what he said during his acceptance speech.

Joaquin Phoenix portrayed the ‘Joker’ in the 2019 blockbuster movie

Life’s a comedy when you’re a fan of this DC character. Just in time for Halloween, Joker premiered during October 2019. There, fans saw the origin story of this character and how he became who he is.

The title character is portrayed by Signs, Walk the Line, and You Were Never Really Here actor, Joaquin Phoenix. Earning praise from fans and critics alike, the actor went on to win multiple awards for his role in this film. That includes the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Joaquin Phoenix won an Academy Award for his role in ‘Joker’

Once Joaquin Phoenix received his award for Best Actor, he used his acceptance speech to give a “voice to the voiceless.” He mentioned farming techniques and the causes other celebrities focus on, whether that be gender and racial equality or climate change.

“God, I’m full of so much gratitude right now,” Joaquin Phoenix said. “And I do not feel elevated above any of my fellow nominees or anyone in this room because we share the same love, the love of film, and this form of expression has given me the most extraordinary life. I don’t know what I’d be without it. But I think the greatest gift that it’s given me, and many of us in this room is the opportunity to use our voice for the voiceless.”

“I’ve been thinking a lot about some of the distressing issues that we are facing collectively,” he continued. “And I think at times we feel, or were made to feel, that we champion [different] causes, but for me, I see commonality. I think, whether we’re talking about gender inequality, or racism, or queer rights, or indigenous rights, or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice. “

This is not the first time Joaquin Phoenix raised awareness with his platform

Joaquin Phoenix earned a few awards and recognitions for his work with Joker. That includes the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor. During each acceptance speech, the actor put a focus on the causes that he cared about.

Although, at the Academy Awards, Joaquin Phoenix wasn’t the only actor taking a stand. The star of movies like Black Swan and V for Vendetta, Natalie Portman, used her dress to pull focus to all the female directors who were not nominated at this year’s award show. During his acceptance speech for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt mentioned the impeachment trails.
