Jodie Comer Was Nervous for Her ‘Killing Eve’ Audition After Getting Drunk With Show’s Creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Everyone gets nervous sometimes, even BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning actress, Jodie Comer.

The 26-year-old actress got her big break when she landed the role of Villanelle or Oksana Astankova in BBC America’s Killing Eve. Comer’s played the hired assassin (she’s not one for calling Villanelle a “psychopath” — learn why here) for two seasons with Season 3 currently in the works opposite Grey’s Anatomy alum and Golden Globe winner, Sandra Oh.

Their game of cat and mouse has captivated audiences with Comer going from a funny, style-obsessed 20-something to a killer without any remorse in seconds flat. Unlike her character on screen, Comer herself has emotions and did recently confess to feeling nervous ahead of her audition for Killing Eve

Why Jodie Comer felt nervous before her ‘Killing Eve’ audition

Before she auditioned for Killing Eve, a role that would undoubtedly change her life, Comer had a number of acting credits to her name. She had a recurring role in the comedy series, My Mad Fat Diary and played “the other woman” in the mystery TV show, Doctor Foster. She also played the lead role in a thriller called Thirteen as well as royalty in The White Princess

Even with all her previous acting experience, she got nervous before her Killing Eve audition because of a night she spent partying with the creator of the show, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also created the Emmy Award-winning series, Fleabag

During an interview with Variety after her Emmy win (she won in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category) on Sept. 22, 2019, Comer revealed she got drunk with Waller-Bridge months prior to her Killing Eve audition at the BAFTAs in 2017.

A fan of Fleabag, Comer said she partied with Waller-Bridge until the early hours of the morning and looked back on the experience when she got the call about auditioning for Killing Eve feeling nervous.

“We were both really drunk, until silly o’clock in the morning, and kind of forgot about it,” Comer said before adding, “Then months later I got the Killing Eve audition.”

She continued saying, “You know when you get the fear when you can’t remember from a hangover, and you’re like, ‘Oh, God, was I doing an embarrassing dance? Did I do something cringey?’ I panicked, but we spoke on the phone, and she was like, ‘We were in the same boat. It’s all good.’”

Waller-Bridge and Comer attended another awards ceremony, this time the Emmys, where they both won an award. In Waller-Bridge’s case, she won multiple Emmys and a picture of her holding a drink in one hand with a cigarette in another went viral.

Here’s hoping Comer and Waller-Bridge got a chance to celebrate their wins together. Maybe Comer ended the night with another possibly embarrassing story she can worry about when she auditions for another one of Waller-Bridge’s in the future.
