‘John Wick 5’ Is Happening Now Too Because the Fan Love Is Real
Let us be the ones to remind you that for at least the next two years, there will be more Keanu Reeves.
John Wick 4, Bill & Ted 3, and The Matrix 4, are already in the film chute, but the Age of Keanu isn’t ending anytime soon. While the star is already attached to film, TV, and print projects, now we can tack on another entry in the John Wick universe. Be seeing you!
‘John Wick 4’ was greenlit in 2019
Shortly after John Wick 3 – Parabellum killed it at the box office, Lionsgate announced it greenlit the sequel, John Wick 4. Originally, The Matrix 4 and John Wick 4 were set to be released on May 21, 2021 — a.k.a. Keanu Reeves Day — but with production stalled due to COVID-19, plans changed.
Fans are thrilled to even get a fourth movie. Why? Director Chad Stahelski admitted he and Reeves were finished with the franchise after part 3.
During an interview with Collider he said, “Now we’ve been asked to do a fourth one and we’re like, ‘Okay, they’re all standalone. There’s no…plan. We’re kinda making it up as we go. But we finished the third one and Keanu and I are like, ‘Okay, time to move on. Let’s go do a romantic comedy or something. We’re good’.”
But Reeves wound up changing his mind while doing the international promo tour for the film and told Stahelski he had one more left in him. Now it seems he has two more.
‘John Wick 5’ is coming and will be shot with ‘John Wick 4’
We don’t know who asked for this gift, but we’ll take it. Although Stahelski also told Collider that topping part 3 was keeping him up at night, John Wick 5 just received a green light.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer shared the news during an earnings call, and said the goal is to shoot both sequels back to back in 2021.
While John Wick 4 is now due to drop on May 27, 2022, Reeves is currently working on The Matrix 4, which is set for an April 2022 release. His schedule has to free up from the latter.
Reeves is also connected to ‘John Wick’ spinoffs
Last year, Lionsgate also revealed plans to expand John Wick into TV. A new Starz series will focus on the assassins’ hotel, The Continental, and serve as a prequel to the movies and provide an origin story for how it became neutral grounds.
The second spinoff will revolve around the Russian training school seen in John Wick 3, and its working title is Ballerina. Unlike The Continental, Ballerina is a spinoff film that was first announced in 2017.
The movie follows one of the budding assassin pupils who grows up and seeks to avenge her family’s murders. The script is already complete.
Reeves is said to be attached to both projects but it’s unclear whether he’s starring in them too. In the meantime, fans can check out his foray into comics as co-author of BRZRKR, a series about an immortal demigod.
