JoJo Siwa Explains Why She Doesn’t Want to Label Herself Yet
JoJo Siwa has been making a name for herself online for years, and just recently, she decided to open up even more about herself with her large platform. The YouTube creator, dancer, and singer shared with the world that she identifies as part of the LGBTQ community, something that will no doubt inspire her many young fans on the internet. In a new Instagram Live video, Siwa explained why she hasn’t chosen a label for herself — specifically within the LGBTQ community — just yet.
How JoJo Siwa came out as part of the LGBTQ community
Siwa posted a TikTok of herself on Jan. 21 dancing and lipsyncing to Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and then proceeded to share a picture of her wearing a t-shirt the next day saying “Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever.”
A flood of support and acceptance came Siwa’s way on the internet, with people welcoming her with open arms to the LGBTQ community. A couple of days later, Siwa addressed some questions that her fans had in an Instagram Live.
“Woah, this is really awesome. I am so happy,” Siwa gushed in the Live about the reaction she has received. “Personally, I have never ever been this happy before and it feels really awesome. And I’ve been happy for a little bit now, and it’s so awesome. Y’all can just tell how happy I am.”
Why JoJo Siwa doesn’t want to label herself in the LGBTQ community
One fan asked Siwa what label she uses to identify herself within the LGBTQ community. Common labels for someone’s sexuality can include lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, and gay.
“I have thought about this and the reason why I am not ready to say this answer is because I don’t really know this answer,” Siwa replied. “I think humans are awesome. I think humans are really incredible people.”
Siwa focused on how coming out and being her authentic self has made her feel.
“Right now, I’m super duper happy,” she continued. “I want to share everything with the world, I really do, but I also want to keep things in my life private until they’re ready to be public.”
JoJo Siwa spoke some inspirational words to her fans
Even though Siwa hasn’t chosen a specific label yet, she emphasized the importance of acceptance for people who identify as part of the LGBTQ community.
“Right now what matters is that you guys know that no matter who you love, that it’s OK and that it’s awesome and that the world is there for you,” Siwa expressed. “There’s so many people that are there for you.”
Siwa didn’t ignore the very real difficulties some may face in coming out, like discrimination or danger, but wanted to be a shining light to show others that it’s OK to be who you are and that she supports them.
“It might be harder for some people and it might be easier for some people to come out, or to be themselves, but I think coming out has this stigma around it that it’s a really scary thing, but it’s not anymore,” Siwa said. “There’s so many accepting and loving people out there that it’s OK.”
