Josh Gad Reveals the Reason He Dropped an F-Bomb On His ‘Frozen 2’ Producer
Frozen is a family-friendly Disney movie. The people who make Disney animated movies are adults and they don’t always keep it clean. Good thing kids are only around after the films are completed, not when they’re making the films. During the making of Frozen 2, the filmmakers got to see the Josh Gad who stars in R-rated comedies like The Wedding Ringer and Little Monsters.
The cast of Frozen 2 was at a press conference on Saturday, November 8. When Gad shared a story for the grown-ups in the room, he got costars Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell recalling their NSFW outtakes too. Frozen 2 is in theaters November 22.
Josh Gad is more hostile than Olaf in ‘Frozen 2’
Olaf is the comic relief of Frozen and Josh Gad is used to getting lots of laughs in movies. But making animated movies is hard work and a lot of the filmmakers are focused on business. So when producer Peter Del Vecho sat stone-faced while Gad performed his lines, Gad called him out.
They were still recording and the animators went to the trouble of animating Olaf to Gad’s line.
“The first thing they ever showed me was something I said in the booth,” Gad said. “This is the way Peter watches me [straight faced] when I record and I’m making a really funny line. So the first clip they ever showed me was Olaf going, ‘Oh really? Well, f*ck you, Peter.’”
Idina Menzel swears at herself
When you hear Let It Go or Into the Unknown, you’re hearing the best takes that Idina Menzel sang. Even Idina Menzel isn’t perfect so there are takes where she misses the notes or flubs the lines. The animators love to use those takes too.
“They had one of me singing, ‘Into the Unknugh’ and messing up my note really bad in the studio,” Menzel said. “I have an expletive that’s not Disney friendly.”
Sometimes the ‘Frozen 2’ animators just like to have a goof
It takes years to animate a Disney film so sometimes the animators just have to amuse themselves. Sometimes they have a morbid sense of humor, as Kristen Bell recalled seeing a version of a Frozen 2 action scene where Anna jumped off a ledge.
“They’re happy and we can tell because often when I watch a pre-vis, they throw some jokes in there,” Bell said. “They really trick me because let me tell you something, the first time I was shown The Next Right Thing, I didn’t make the cliff jump.”
Don’t worry, in the final cut of Frozen 2, Anna lands safely on the other side.
But seriously, Josh Gad loves the ‘Frozen 2’ animators
Josh Gad was happy to work blue in a room full of press and share stories of mishaps in the recording booth, but in the end he is extremely proud of the animators who brought Frozen 2 to life.
“We could not do any of this without the animation,” Gad said. “That is truly one of the most incredible groups working on any movie I have ever been a part of.”
