Josh Gordon: His Net Worth, and How Much Money He’s Losing for Leaving the NFL
Josh Gordon is one of the most exciting and most frustrating NFL players of all time. He’s exciting when he’s on the field because he’s a talented and game-changing wide receiver. Frustrating because his battles with substance abuse make you wonder if he’ll ever play in the NFL again. Even though Gordon announced plans to step away from the field, we still don’t know if he’ll play again. After all, he was born in 1991, so he’s still in his 20s and his athletic prime. As he takes a break from football, let’s look at Josh Gordon’s net worth, his 2018 contract, and why he’s leaving the NFL.
Who is Josh Gordon?
Josh Gordon was born in Houston in 1991, and he’s always had strong athletic genes. At Lamar High School in Houston, he was a football standout as a junior and senior, and he also was a state champion track athlete.
Gordon played college football at Baylor University in Texas. He transferred to the University of Utah after a failed drug test in 2011, but he arrived on campus too late to play football that year. The Cleveland Browns drafted him the 2012 NFL supplemental draft.
Why is he leaving the NFL?

Josh Gordon took to Twitter on December 20, 2018, to say he’s leaving the NFL to focus on his mental health. He thanked New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick, and the rest of the organization for the opportunity to play for the team.
However, Gordon might be facing a suspension by the NFL, according to ESPN. If he’s suspended, the assumption is he would miss the rest of the 2018 season and potentially part of the 2019 season.
Josh Gordon’s past problems
As we mentioned a minute ago, Josh Gordon struggles with substance abuse.
He played in all 16 games as a rookie with the Browns in 2012, but he missed the first two games of 2013 after violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Still, he racked up 1,646 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in an all-pro season.
The NFL suspended Gordon for the entire 2014 season after an impaired driving arrest, but he was reinstated later that season. He missed the 2015 and 2016 seasons due to substance abuse suspensions.
Gordon’s 2015 suspension makes him one of the most fined players in NFL history. He lost more than $2.9 million in salary that season.
Gordon returned for the final five games in 2017. He played one 2018 game with Cleveland before the team traded him to New England. He played 11 games with the Patriots before announcing his decision to leave football.
What is Josh Gordon’s net worth?
Sitting out two full seasons and parts of two others means Josh Gordon left a lot of his salary on the table. NFL players get paid on game days, so if you’re suspended and not playing, you’re not getting paid.

Gordon’s drug suspensions aren’t helping, either. Teams are reluctant to sign a player who might not be able to stay on the field, and they’re not going to pay top dollar if they offer a contract.
Between the lost salary and smaller contract figures, Josh Gordon’s net worth is $1 million in 2018, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
How large is his contract?
Josh Gordon’s salary for the 2018 season is $790,000 split between the Browns and Patriots, according to Spotrac. He made more than $2.7 million as a rookie from his salary and signing bonus.
Gordon was supposed to make $1,068,406 in 2017, but since he played in just five games, the total was closer to $333,900.
