Joshua Bassett Announced a New Single; How Long Has the ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ Star Been Making Music?

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was pretty successful when it premiered on Disney+ in November. Not only that, but the stars of the show now have major followings as well. The show is relatable to teens and older millennials alike, and it brings the fun music of the original High School Musical movie back for a new generation. In addition to using those songs, a few originals were introduced as well, with a couple written by the cast. One of the stars, Joshua Bassett, just announced his first single since the premiere of the show, and fans are excited.

Ricky’s a high schooler who’s pretty lowkey in the popularity department. He had a pretty great relationship with Nini until he pushed her away when she told him she loved him. After a summer apart, he figured things would go back to normal, but she’d moved on. The series shows how he goes about trying to get back in her good graces.

Bassett has been writing original songs for a while and even wrote one for ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’

While this is his first single outside of the series, he’s not new to the whole songwriting thing. His current pinned tweet is an original song called “Sorry” and he posts songs he wrote often on his Instagram. There’s “Do It All Again,” “Not Right Now,” and “I Know (Lie Lie Lie)” to name a few. He even has a pretty long teaser of “Common Sense,” his song coming out in April, in his first post on Instagram.

And, of course, he co-wrote the song “Just for a Moment” with Olivia Rodrigo who plays Nini on the show. Rodrigo also wrote the song “All I Want,” and both songs appear at pivotal moments for their characters.

Bassett said In an interview with Decider in November that collaborating with Rodrigo on this song was “awesome” and special because they knew their characters’ perspectives so well.

“It made it that much more accurate because we knew what our characters were going through more than anyone else could,” he said about the process. “When you write from truth, great writing, that’s where it comes from.”

Bassett also shared that they were constantly working on the song “Just for a Moment” on set in between takes. “During lunch breaks, we’d eat our food as fast as we can so we could go and work on the song. It was a crazy, awesome experience,” he said.

What does Bassett hope for Season 2 of the show?

The next big question for Bassett, other than when will an entire album drop, is what’s up next for Ricky in Season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. He told Entertainment Tonight in January that he’s looking forward to seeing how his character grows.

“I’m really excited to see further development of all the characters because everyone gets their spotlight in season one, but it’s hard to fit all of that into 10 episodes, to really give everyone their moment,” he said. He also shared that Season 2 will be 12 episodes, and not 10, giving them a little more time.

Bassett also shared that there’s still so much of the cast that the audience hasn’t seen yet, and hopefully that’ll be on display for everyone in Season 2. “As we all grow together, the fan base will grow with us through the journey and it’s going to be a beautiful thing. I’m excited for everyone to get their time in the spotlight.”
