Justin Bieber’s Former Pastor Carl Lentz Is in Outpatient Treatment for Mental Illness After Cheating on His Wife

Pastor Carl Lentz rose to fame as the pastor of international church Hillsong United when celebrities began following him. Celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber and Chris Pratt were often in attendance at his services and Lentz even mentored Bieber. Now, things are going quite differently for Lentz. He was recently fired from Hillsong after being unfaithful to his wife. Now, he is in treatment for mental illness.

Carl Lentz fired

In Nov. Hillsong released a statement that Lentz had been fired from their staff.

“Today Hillsong Church East Coast advised our congregation that we have terminated the employment of Pastor Carl Lentz,” founder Brian Houston said in the statement.  “This action was not taken lightly and was done in the best interests of everyone, including Pastor Carl.”

At the time, Houston was very vague regarding what exactly Lentz did to be fired and only revealed that he and Lentz had had “ongoing discussions in relation to leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures.”

What did Carl Lentz do?

Lentz, who led at Hillsong for 10 years, was more forthcoming about the details of what led to his departure.

“I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life and held accountable for that,” he wrote on Instagram. “This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions. I now begin a journey of rebuilding trust with my wife, Laura and my children and taking real time to work on and heal my own life and seek out the help that I need.”

Lentz then apologized to the church and those who felt hurt by his actions.

“I am deeply sorry for breaking the trust of many people who we have loved serving and understand that this news can be very hard and confusing for people to hear and process,” he wrote. “I would have liked to say this with my voice, to you, in person because you are owed that. But that opportunity I will not have. So to those people, I pray you can forgive me and that over time I can live a life where trust is earned again.”

Carl Lentz is now in treatment

Since news broke about Lentz’s infidelity, former members of the church and people who followed Lentz have had a mix of reactions. Some have expressed concern and disdain while others have supported Lentz in making amends.

Sources recently told Entertainment Tonight that Lentz is now getting treatment in an outpatient facility for depression, anxiety, and pastoral burnout.

The source told the outlet that Lentz is getting help in order to “improve himself for his family, and he is dedicated to getting the help he needs as his family supports him.”

Hillsong’s investigation

After an outcry from the congregation, Hillsong decided to hire an outside law firm to investigate some concerns that have come up since Lentz’s firing.

“For this reason we have decided to appoint a New York based legal firm that is not associated or affiliated with Hillsong to conduct an in-depth review and investigation into all concerns and any wider cultural issues,” the church said in a statement. “We are taking this extremely seriously and on the basis of this report, we will be better positioned to take whatever actions are deemed necessary to right the wrongs and see Hillsong East Coast move forward in a way that enables many more people to find hope in Jesus.”
