Kaley Cuoco Forced Into Producing to Cast Herself in Roles Following ‘The Big Bang Theory?’
Kaley Cuoco – still riding the fame train tied to The Big Bang Theory – was one of the sitcom’s most prominent figures. Starring as Penny – the aspiring actress and full-time waitress – Kaley Cuoco was the only female in a lead role when the show first aired.
Though she played a trope – the pretty girl next door (literally and figuratively) – her character was an asset to the show’s narrative progression and character dynamics. However, Cuoco failed to develop a successful on-screen presence outside TBBT, and her off-screen reputation took a few hits while starring on the CBS hit.
During The Big Bang Theory, Kaley Cuoco starred in several critical flops, including, but not limited to, The Wedding Ringer, Authors Anonymous, Hop, and To Be Fat Like Me. Staying within the comedy realm when donning lead roles, the actress failed to cement an identity disparate from Penny.
Despite appearing in several Hollywood films, the actress is intimately tied to Penny and – given the negative reviews her other performances often receive – she may not be first on casting directors’ lists at the moment.
Kaley Cuoco: Razzie awards and reputation
Kaley Cuoco has won two Razzie awards for worst actress in the span of her career: one for Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Road Chip and another for her starring role in The Wedding Ringer. If there’s anything that sends a negative message to the Hollywood elite, it’s a Razzie, and having two definitely does not work in the actress’s favor.
While some performers are able to accept Razzies with grace – having won Emmys and Oscars – Kaley Cuoco never won an Emmy, despite starring on The Big Bang Theory for twelve seasons. Jim Parsons won four times for his performance as Sheldon Cooper.
Despite her failure to boost ticket sales or promise strong critical reception, Kaley Cuoco allegedly charges quite the fee to star in a movie. According to The Richest, Cuoco asks for far too much money given the success, or lack thereof, inherent to her past roles. Furthermore, she is often only eyed to play supporting characters in indie films.
Kaley Cuoco is producing her only two upcoming projects: ‘Harley Quinn’ and ‘The Flight Attendant’
Given Kaley Cuoco’s reputation and past missteps in Hollywood, it seems as if the star has decided to use her fortune in an attempt to stay on screen. Yes, Norman Productions – Kaley Cuoco’s production company – is behind both Harley Quinn and The Flight Attendant, which IMDb list as her only upcoming on-screen endeavors.
Harley Quinn will be an animated TV series, for which Kaley Cuoco will provide the voice of the lead character. The Flight Attendant will star Kaley Cuoco as Cassandra Bowden in a thriller.
The Flight Attendant is based on a book by the same name and follows a flight attendant who wakes up hungover, next to a dead body in a Dubai hotel room. Not knowing how the dead body got there, she proceeds with her day. Bowden begins to question if she could be the murderer when questioned by the FBI.
Let’s hope that Kaley Cuoco’s decision to produce these two works pays off. If she wants to cement a better reputation in Hollywood, she’s going to have to prove she’s got acting chops outside TBBT. She must become more than Penny.
