Jay Z and Kanye: Everything We Know About Their Heated Tidal Feud
In 2017, Jay Z made his music return with the album 4:44. The album confirmed many things about Jay Z, including his feud with Kanye West.
So what exactly came between the two rappers and former friends? And what exactly have they said about each other? Here is everything we know about their feud.
1. It might stem from Kanye’s concert rant
The first public sign that all might not be well between the two rappers was when Kanye went on a rant on Nov. 19, 2016. He was performing in Sacramento, California when he claimed Beyoncé agreed to perform at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards only if she would win Video of the Year for “Formation.” She did end up winning the award that year.
He also claimed that Jay Z wouldn’t return his calls. “There will never be a Watch the Throne 2,” revealed Kanye. He later said, “Don’t call me, after the robbery, and say ‘How you feelin’?’ You wanna know how I’m feeling? Come by the house. Bring the kids by the house, like we’re brothers.”
After Jay Z’s 4:44 was released, TMZ reported that their feud started following this very rant, which happened before Kanye’s hospitalization. Sources close to Kanye don’t think it’s right that Jay Z is holding it against him.
“Kanye was days away from going to a psych ward with some really serious mental issues,” the source told TMZ. “We get why he [Jay] was upset, but give Kanye a break.”

2. Their kids reportedly haven’t played together yet
This might be surprising considering how close the two rappers were. But one thing that Kanye also revealed during his concert rant is that the two haven’t had their kids spend time with each other yet. “Bring the kids by the house like we’re brothers,” he pleaded. “Let’s sit down… I can’t take this s**t bro. Our kids have never even played together.”

3. Jay Z refused to be on ‘Pop Style’ with Drake and Kanye
Another thing that came between the former best friends was Jay Z’s refusal to perform on the song “Pop Style.” It seems like the decision was made because Jay Z is in business with Tidal while Drake has an exclusive deal with Apple. Kanye talked about the situation during his concert rant when he said there was some “Apple-Tidal bullsh*t.”

4. Kanye is reportedly leaving Tidal
Kanye reportedly also left Tidal over a money dispute, according to TMZ. Sources claim the rapper believes the company owes him money and hasn’t been happy with the music service for a long time.

5. Kanye’s lawyer reportedly sent Tidal a letter
There have been certain occurrences leading up to Kanye’s departure from the company. The rapper’s lawyer reportedly sent a letter to Tidal claiming they were in breach and that their contract is terminated, according to TMZ. Both sides reportedly tried to resolve the conflict through lawyers for weeks, but it hasn’t worked.
Kanye reportedly believes he is owed a bonus for The Life of Pablo after the album gained over 1 million subscribers for Tidal. In turn, Tidal reportedly believes Kanye has yet to deliver the videos required by his contract.

6. Jay Z’s ‘Kill Jay Z’ diss to Kanye is referring to tour money
In Jay Z’s song, “Kill Jay Z” he raps, “But you got hurt because you did cool by ‘Ye // You gave him 20 million without blinkin’ // He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f*** was he thinkin’? // ‘F*** wrong with everybody?’ is what you sayin’ // But if everybody’s crazy, you’re the one that’s insane.”
Many understood these lyrics to be a direct shot at Kanye, but what is the $20 million he’s referring to? According to TMZ, it’s Live Nation’s deal with Kanye. There was a $20 million advance for Kanye to cover expenses on his Saint Pablo Tour.

7. Tidal has reportedly threatened to sue Kanye
It’s not surprising that the company would put up a fight when it comes to Kanye leaving. TMZ also reports that Tidal has threatened to take legal action, giving Kanye a letter saying that he’s still in an exclusive contract and will be sued if he goes to another streaming service.

8. Kanye drops his 2018 album elsewhere
It seems as though the rapper has followed through with his threats. On June 1, 2018, Kanye dropped his album ye on Spotify and Apple Music, breaking his exclusivity. Clearly, things haven’t been repaired.
