The Kardashians: Are Traditional TV Stars Jealous of the Famous Sisters?
There’s no arguing that the Kardashian family is winning. Between their many successful businesses and their ever-popular TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, they are in the spotlight now more than ever before. Although they clearly have millions of fans all over the world, the Kardashians have also become somewhat of a punchline. That disdain was perfectly illustrated at this year’s Emmy Awards when both Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner received a less-than-warm welcome from the award show’s audience. While the sisters clearly tried to take the awkward event in stride, talk show host Wendy Williams wasn’t afraid to speak up in defense of the famous family.
Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner were laughed at
The 2019 Emmy Awards are a big deal as one of the events that officially kicks off awards season. Television stars and industry insiders everywhere gather together to celebrate the very best television achievements of the year, and this year, there was certainly a lot to celebrate. Major TV shows like Game of Thrones received several awards and icons like Billy Porter got their moments to shine.
Still, there was one particular part of the evening that was distinctly uncomfortable for everyone involved. Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner stepped on stage to present the award for Outstanding Reality TV, but they barely started talking before the crowd turned against them. Kim Kardashian said, “our family knows firsthand how truly compelling television comes from real people just being themselves,” and the Emmys crowd broke out in audible laughter.
Both the sisters looked confused as Kendall Jenner said, “telling their stories unfiltered and unscripted,” and that’s when the crowd really broke down. The audience laughed so loudly that both sisters seemed visibly annoyed, and left the stage after delivering the award.
Wendy Williams said other stars are ‘jealous’ of the Kardashians
The crowd laughing at Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner became one of the most talked-about moments of the night. Social media users made numerous memes about the incident, and several talk show hosts referenced the moment – including Wendy Williams. Although Williams has historically had some problems with the Kardashian family, she stuck up for the sisters on the September 23 episode of her show. Williams stated that all the actors in the audience laughing at the sisters must have been “jealous” because the Kardashians “make more money than the whole building.”
Williams went on to say that the Kardashians “stole everything in terms of fame” and that the other television stars, who had spent years on their training and education, must be angry at the family and that was why they had laughed so loudly. She implored the Kardashians not to get mad at the haters and to keep on doing what they do.
Do the Kardashians mind being laughed at?
It seems likely that Wendy Williams’ words of support didn’t make a lot of difference to the Kardashian family (although lately, Williams has made amends with Kris Jenner as well as Kanye West for some past criticisms) and that they aren’t really sweating the negativity. After all, money speaks, and millions of viewers want what the Kardashians are selling. It is fan support that contributed to Kylie Jenner becoming the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, and what continues to keep Keeping Up With the Kardashians on TV year after year.
Neither Kim Kardashian nor Kendall Jenner has addressed the awkward moment at the Emmy Awards just yet, but it is likely to come up in the weeks to come, especially as new episodes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians continue to air.
