The Kardashians Never Thought ‘KUWTK’ Would Become What it Has: ‘I Was Like, ‘Whatever”

Keeping Up With the Kardashians has become one of the longest-running reality shows on television. But when it first started, nobody in the family could have guessed what it would turn into. Back in 2007, KUWTK was only a 30-minute reality show about a semi-famous family. Today, the women who star in the show are worth millions — even billions — and have created highly successful brands for themselves. But when the show first started out, the Kardashian-Jenners didn’t think much of it.

KUWTK premiered back in 2007, before the women were even famous

When the show first premiered back in 2007, the women were relatively unknown, with the exception of Kim Kardashian, who had made an infamous sex tape that still follows her to this day (though she has greatly proved that she has more to offer than that tape). At the time, her sisters, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian and Kendall and Kylie Jenner, were essentially nobodies. The Kardashian name was first heard during O.J. Simpson’s murder trial back in the 1990s, but with the exception of Kim and former Olympian Bruce Jenner, the family wasn’t that famous. That was, until Momager Kris Jenner thought a reality show would be a good idea.

Kim Kardashian only wanted to do the show to promote the sisters’ clothing stores

When Kim first learned the family might be doing a reality show, she wasn’t expecting the massive amount of fame that would eventually come with it. Rather, she wanted to bring awareness to the sisters’ clothing brands. At the time, Kourtney was running a children’s boutique, Smooch, while the three Kardashian sisters were in the process of building up their clothing store brand, Dash. “When the opportunity for our TV show came about, I wanted to do it to bring attention to our stores,” Kim revealed to Variety in 2015. She could not have predicted what the show would become.

Khloé Kardashian and Kendall Jenner didn’t give it a second thought

Just like her sister, Khloé wasn’t expecting the fame, either. “I don’t think we even knew what we were saying yes to,” Khloé told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. She said that everything happened very quickly in terms of coming up with the idea and starting to film. But her sisters, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, were even less interested. “I was like, ‘Whatever. What am I having for lunch tomorrow?’” Kendall Jenner recalled when she heard about the show. Now, a dozen years later, the women are part of one of the most famous families in the world.

Today, the Kardashians have various brands and major notoriety

These days, there is hardly anybody across the country who hasn’t heard of the Kardashians. And each of the women has established her own brand in one way or another. Kim and Kylie have the most notable brands, between Kim’s KKW Beauty and Kylie’s Kylie Cosmetics, which has made her a billionaire. Khloé is the owner of the Good American clothing brand and has her own reality show on E! called Revenge Body. And Kendall was the world’s highest paid model in 2018. 12 years later, and it seems like none of them have plans to slow down any time soon.
