Kate Chastain from ‘Below Deck’ Says Teddi Mellencamp from ‘RHOBH’ Changed This Season
Kate Chastain from Below Deck had quite a bit to say about Teddi Mellencamp from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills this week.
The chief stew threw a bit of shade Mellencamp’s way after watching a recent episode where Mellencamp tried to reconcile how she was going to balance career and family. Chastain tweeted, “Im still not really sure what exactly an ‘accountability coach’ does, but I’m pretty certain it doesn’t require more time away one’s children than any other job the millions of working mothers have.”
Mellencamp reacted by writing that all moms struggle with guilt and why would Chastain judge her? Chastain went further with her thoughts on Mellencamp with Kate Casey on her Reality Life podcast.
It’s all about the second season
As someone who has been on reality television for the last five years, Chastain has decent insight into cast evolution. “I just know from doing Below Deck that people who come on a reality show for the first season, they are themselves,” Chastain said.
However, once cast members are more in tune with how reality television works, they start to change their approach. “Once they get asked back for a second season, they know how the game is played,” she says. “They spend time then thinking about who they are going to be and really turn it up a notch.”
Chastain adds you can see this occur on any Bravo shows with a cast member’s second season. “The second season they always come in hot,” she remarks. “Billie Lee [Vanderpump Rules] came in hot the second season. I mean people from Below Deck when they come back for a second season, they come back in really hot.”
Chastain thinks Mellencamp changed this season
Mellencamp was more herself during the first season, Chastain says. “I think that Teddi, after her first season, has completely changed.” Last year Mellencamp was casual and liked her beach house with her “Solo cups” Chastain observed. Mellencamp would often ask Kyle Richards to help her with her makeup during girls’ trips. Or she’d ask for advice choosing an outfit.
“But now she’s become a Stepford Wife,” Chastain adds. “She’s dressing just like them [other cast members]. I just wish she would have stayed more true to who she was.” Chastain currently sees Denise Richards as being the most authentic on RHOBH. But then again, this is Richards’ first season.
Chastain adds that most of the cast are playing the reality television game. “They all want conflict and screen time,” she says. Casey asked if Chastain would want to see a cast member swapped out. Chastain responded that she hopes Lisa Vanderpump doesn’t leave the show. “I feel like she’s such a great part of the show and she has been for so long,” Chastain says. “I’m loving Denise Richards this season. I think she’s a nice contrast to some of the other cast members who are less than authentic.”
