Kate Gosselin is back on reality TV — and hard’s to believe she first got her start with ex Jon Gosselin over a decade ago. Their hit breakout show, Jon & Kate Plus 8, became an instant hit, as viewers got to see inside the lives of the two parents as they raised a set of twins and sextuplets. Unfortunately, Jon and Kate couldn’t make their marriage work. And according to tabloids, they were at war with each other when it came to custody battles and money up until recent times.
Jon has strayed from the spotlight, but Kate is ready to reclaim her spot on reality TV. She’s now on her show, Kate Plus Date, looking for love — but it seems many of her followers already think her show is a total flop.
Kate Gosselin received a ton of hate after her divorce from Jon
There’s no doubt Kate Gosselin has become a polarizing public figure. She and Jon divorced back in 2009, and while it could have been quiet and amicable, both parties had a lot to say about each other. Kate claimed Jon was partying with college kids and became totally different “overnight,” while Jon was tired of Kate’s loveless attitude toward him and believes it drove him away. Even at the beginning of Kate’s dating show, she discussed how her public image was totally tarnished from her relationship with Jon.
It seems Kate’s bad reputation has continued to follow her, too. Hannah and Collin, two of the sextuplets, have chosen to live with Jon in recent times, and many think it’s because Kate is an irresponsible mother. A TLC publicist also came forward recently and admitted on a podcast they thought Kate was an “awful human” after meeting and working with her. And the publicist notes others at TLC seemed to agree.
She’s attempting to find love via her dating show, Kate Plus Date
Despite the bad press, Kate is still charging forward with Kate Plus Date. She’s noted before that while she was excited to go through this process and meet quality men who’ve been vetted through a matchmaker process, she also had to get vulnerable on screen, which was hard for her. “The whole thing of it was, I didn’t realize how awkward I’d feel and how this whole journey takes place. I learned so much about myself and so much about how I react to different situations. And it’s painful at times,” she told a group of journalists at a Television Critics Association event. And Kate is also enlisting the help of her 18-year-old twins, Mady and Cara, too.
We’ve already seen some of Kate’s dates as well. Us Weekly reminds us of a particularly painful date Kate had with suitor Stephen. Together, the two made pizza during a cooking class — but Kate was getting agitated with Stephen’s inability to make a decent pie. Even Mady and Cara chimed in with Kate’s obvious frustrations. “I think that she is the worst possible person on the planet at hiding her emotions,” Mady said during an interview. “Like, if she feels something, like, you see it on her face immediately.”
Fans are unimpressed so far with what they’ve seen
Many were expecting Kate’s dating show to at least be amusing, but fans have expressed how disappointed they are so far. On her Instagram photoshowing her press tour, many took to the comments to express their feelings. “Awful show awful kate..watched 2 mins [sic],” one follower commented. Another added, “A grown woman does not scream and act like a child over a bug. So phony. Not cute!” And yet another commented, “Terrible show, imo, watched 10 minutes, it is to phoney and unbelievable! [sic].”
Not everyone’s hating on Kate’s attempts at love — but many others left comments on what they think of Mady and Cara chiming in, too. “Mady seems so comfortable on camera and very into this, but Cara never speaks and as witnessed in this picture, seems uninterested. It’s hard to watch her on screen and I sometimes wonder why she said yes,” another fan offered.
Despite the critique, we’re still looking forward to seeing if Kate finds love in the end — and we’re betting her followers will continue watching her journey, too.
