Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Both Ignore This Ridiculous Royal Rule
There are so many rules that the British royal family must follow. While these habits most likely come naturally to Prince William and Prince Harry, anyone who married into the family might have a more difficult time keeping track of every regulation.
Of course, certain rules are very important – like the one about royals not disclosing political affiliations with the public. But then there are more minor rules that don’t matter as much, like the one about not wearing platform heels because “the Queen doesn’t like them.”
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle both had a lot to learn about royal life when they married into the family. Here are some of the rules they’ve adapted to – plus the one silly rule they don’t bother following.
What royal rules does Meghan Markle break?
Between the two royal wives, Meghan Markle is much more likely to be a rule-breaker. She’s been spotted making questionable fashion choices, like wearing off-the-shoulder dresses and refusing to don pantyhose for formal events like Kate Middleton does. She’s also been spotted crossing her legs and not crossing her ankles instead using the “duchess slant” that Middleton perfected. Scandalous!
Beyond just appearances, Markle is breaking royal tradition by choosing to move away from Kensington Palace in advance of the arrival of her new baby. She and Prince Harry are busily prepping Frogmore Cottage, where they’ll live with Meghan’s mom Doria Ragland so she can assist with the baby. There are also rumors that Meghan Markle is considering a home birth instead of having the baby at St. Mary’s hospital like other royal mothers.
Are there any rules that Kate Middleton ignores?
Though the Duchess of Sussex is seen as the rebel between the two women, Kate Middleton doesn’t adhere to every royal rule, either. Most famously, she ignores many of the Queen’s traditions while at home. She allows her children to eat pasta frequently, they don’t go to boarding school, and she’s not above getting down to their level to speak to any of her three kids.
In general, Kate Middleton is a very involved parent, which isn’t always the case for royal family members. Even though she dresses the part, not every aspect of her life is so strictly in line with the royal family’s rules.
Which silly rule do Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle both break?
When it comes to rules for the royal family, this one is especially odd. According to royal etiquette expert Myka Meier, it is against royal protocol to wear diamonds during the day. The only types of jewelry the duchesses should be wearing prior to 6 p.m. are metallics, gemstones, pearls
As with so many other royal rules, the “why” behind the protocol isn’t directly stated. But it could have something to do with the Queen’s distaste for showing off or flaunting one’s wealth – which she actually criticized Kate Middleton for prior to her wedding with Prince William.
Following the royal rules is important… sometimes. But the one about only wearing diamonds after dark is simply bizarre. So strange that both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have broken it a time or two.
Is this one standard that will change once Prince William, becomes king? Hopefully. Because d
