Kate Middleton’s Favorite School Gag Earned Her a Hilarious Nickname
Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, got up to some trouble in school, as evidenced by her cheeky nickname. Keep reading to learn about the royal’s school nickname and what she was like as a teen.
The now 37-year-old enrolled in school at Marlborough College — in Britain, college is the American equivalent of high school — upon leaving Downe House, an all-girls school, after being bullied by other students.
“She was picked on because she was perfect, well-turned-out and lovely,” Jessica Hay, a former classmate of Middleton’s at Downe House said.
Marlborough College, a co-ed school with a larger student body than Middleton’s previous school, provided the future duchess with a change of pace. Students at the school are referred to as “Malburians” and range in age from 13 to 18.
Middleton transferred to the school, known as Britain’s most expensive independent school, halfway through the academic year in 1996. A fellow student who knew Middleton at Marlborough said she “had very little confidence.”
Joan Gall, Middleton’s former tutor, also remarked that Middleton didn’t start school with an outgoing personality but said she soon became comfortable in her new surroundings.
“When she arrived she was very quiet. Coming into a big school like Marlborough was difficult, but she settled in quickly. It was like a big, happy family. We would do things like bake cakes and watch videos,” Gall told the Daily Mail.
Middleton remembered as ‘ordinary’ in school
Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore attended Marlborough College from 2000 to 2002 with the duchess’s younger sister, Pippa Middleton.
She met the future royal and remembered her being “ordinary, hard-working, athletic, and easy-going,” Sebag-Montefiore wrote in a first-person account for The Guardian in 2010.
Kate Middleton’s school nickname came after ‘mischiefs’
According to the 2011 documentary, Kate Middleton: Biography, Middleton took part in some “mischiefs” while at Marlborough.
It isn’t surprising seeing as Sebag-Montefiore said students “experimented with drugs, absconded on Saturday nights to go clubbing, smoked, had sex, and snuck spirits into the school by pouring them into shampoo bottles.”
We’re not sure if Middleton took part in any of the aforementioned activities but we do know she indulged in a bit of “juvenile” behavior. She would “flash her bottom at the boys out of the window.”
“She was so famous for this at the school she became known as Kate Middlebum,” Christopher Andersen, a royal author, said in the documentary.
Princess Eugenie of York, 29, also attended the same school and got in some trouble after being caught “frolicking naked” on school grounds in the middle of the night.
After being woken up by the commotion and investigating the source of the sound, a senior staff member at Marlborough College claimed he found Eugenie among a dozen girls, according to Express.
As for Middleton, she left Marlborough College in July 2000 and moved on to pursue her education at St. Andrews University in Scotland where she met her future husband, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.
Middleton reportedly has such fond memories of her time at Marlborough College, it’s been said she and Prince William are considering it as an option for the schooling of their oldest son, Prince George of Cambridge.
