Kate Middleton is Facing Backlash Over the Earrings She Wore to Baby Archie’s Christening
It’s been days since baby Archie Harrison’s christening, and the world is arguably talking about the July 6 event more than ever. They’re not just talking about how adorable the two-month-old looked, though. Royal fans are also commenting on Kate Middleton’s look in a group photo from the ceremony.
The picture shows the Duchess of Cambridge sitting next to her family, wearing a pink dress with a red headband and matching shoes. She also had on a pair of dangling earrings — which has prompted criticism.
Why people are criticizing Kate Middleton’s earrings
It’s kind of wild.
According to Cosmopolitan, she wore the Collingwood Pearl earrings to honor the late Princess Diana, who wore them to Prince Harry’s christening back in the ‘80s. However, fans are mad that she sported the jewels instead of passing them over to Meghan Markle. They’ve even said that she wore the earrings to upstage her sister-in-law, which is… bonkers.
“Kate should not have earrings Diana wore to #PrinceHarry’s christening. Disrespectful,” one tweet said in part. “I think Kate wanted to upstage Meghan. With all the earrings at [Kate’s] disposal, why did she wear the one that Diana wore during Harry’s christening?” another person added.
Fans have also criticized Kate Middleton’s body language
People have said the Duchess of Cambridge looked kind of awkward in the same group photo. Body language expert Judi James told The Daily Mail that Middleton even looked “ready to flee.”
“With a very relaxed and jolly-looking Camilla down one end of this pose, Kate sits at the other looking oddly self-diminished and prim, with her arms pulled into her torso and a part-smile on her face,” James explained.
But she noted that Middleton likely knew people would be looking at her and was simply trying to avoid stealing the spotlight. “Given all the rift rumors the rather ‘ready to flee’ tension in her pose could be seen as awkwardness, but it could also show a desire to lower her own status signals and not upstage the happy couple,” James added.
Her husband has faced backlash, too
Royals fans accused Prince William of looking “sour” in the group photo. “William doesn’t look happy at all,” one fan shared on Twitter, while another added, “William looks like he smelled something terrible.”
James also commented on his look to The Daily Mail, telling the publication that his pose is hard to ‘fathom.”
“William’s pose behind [Kate] looks harder to fathom out as it seems to show the prince in nightclub bouncer mode. The fig-leaf hand gesture, head tilt and rather evaluating facial expression and knowing smile all bear the hallmarks of a man who won’t let you into the venue until you produce some ID,” James explained.
She continued, “Harry’s chosen shot of his brother at his wedding did seem to make William look oddly furtive behind him so perhaps there’s a theme emerging here. The contrast with the proudly-beaming Charles and Doria is acute but again, it could reflect a moment of quiet, contemplative sibling pleasure for William.”
There’s no denying that Prince William could’ve put on a smile for the photo, but as James points out, maybe he did in one of the unreleased photos.
And as for his wife? Maybe a pair of studs will do the trick next time.
