Is Kate Middleton Jealous of Meghan Markle? What You Need to Know

As a new member of the royal family, Meghan Markle has a lot to learn. From the protocols of living at Kensington Palace to the rules for royal tours to all the traditions surrounding the birth of a royal baby, Kate Middleton is probably a helpful guide for the new Duchess of Sussex. After all, before she was the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton was also a “commoner” who fell in love with a prince and married into the royal family.

Rumors have circulated that Kate Middleton is jealous of Meghan Markle. Meghan and Harry have a little more wiggle room with royal rules than Kate and William, since it’s William and not Harry who’s destined to become king. Plus, Meghan has a glamorous style, and numerous fans followed her lifestyle blog or watched her on Suits.

But is Kate Middleton actually jealous of Meghan Markle, or is that just a rumor? Here’s what you need to know.

Rumor has it that Kate Middleton is jealous of Meghan Markle

Tabloids have claimed that Kate Middleton is jealous of Meghan Markle and her popularity. New Idea reports that Meghan’s close relationship with Queen Elizabeth II has created tension between the duchesses. The report claimed that while Kate put a lot of effort into their friendship — and helping Meghan adjust to life in the royal family — she felt that she “hasn’t gotten much in return.”

Similarly, The Hollywood Gossip claimed that Kate felt like Meghan was pushing her out of the spotlight. Radar reported that Kate was bothered by the fanfare over Meghan and Harry’s wedding. Plus, The Richest counted the reasons that Kate should be jealous of Meghan, naming Meghan’s star power, her romantic relationship with Prince Harry, and her humanitarian efforts as evidence that “Meghan has a clear advantage over Kate.” And The Daily Beast reported that people are disinterested in Kate and William because of Meghan and Harry.

Of course, none of those reports had anything particularly credible to say about the actual relationship between the two duchesses. Kate could be jealous of Meghan behind closed doors. But she definitely wouldn’t be talking to the press about it if that were the case.

Their body language indicates that they’re close

If neither Kate Middleton nor Meghan Markle is going to comment on their relationship to the press, there’s another set of evidence to examine: the way the two duchesses interact when they appear in public together. And that evidence doesn’t seem to support the claims that Kate is incredibly jealous of Meghan, either.

Cosmopolitan reports that according to body language experts, the sisters-in-law seem pretty comfortable with each other. Their body language shows that they engage in friendly conversations with each other. They subconsciously mimic each other’s body language, which indicates that they have a good relationship. Kate and Meghan also smile at each other, and they share genuine laughs when they talk to each other.

Kate Middleton’s style is still more popular than Meghan Markle’s

While reports on what Meghan Markle wears to royal engagements and official appearances might dominate American media, Page Six reports that Kate Middleton’s style remains more popular than Meghan’s. A report from eBay indicates that Kate’s fashion choices have inspired more people to shop than Meghan. The Observer reports that Meghan’s effect on the fashion industry could surpass Kate’s — but it hasn’t happened yet.

Express notes that even though the “Kate effect” eclipses the “Meghan effect,” people also compare Kate and Meghan’s looks. One expert used a mathematical method once used by the ancient Greeks to study the duchesses’ facial proportions. Express learned that Meghan’s “eyes, eyebrows, nose, lips, chin, jaw and facial shape were measured and came closest to the Greeks’ idea of physical ‘perfection.'”

Everybody has an opinion on whether Kate or Meghan has a better sense of style or a prettier face. But none of that is likely to affect the relationship between the two duchesses, who live in neighboring Kensington Palace apartments and are now part of the same insular royal family. As much as people like drama and want to pit the two women against each other, we have a feeling that their real relationship is a lot more friendly than the tabloids want you to think.
