Members of the British Royal Family are known by the formal titles to the general public. We wouldn’t dream of calling Queen Elizabeth II, Liz or referring to Prince Harry as Haz –however, the royals are not strangers to nicknames. Prince George hilariously refers to himself as Archie and Meghan Markle calls her hubby, “My love.” Likewise, though Duchess Kate Middleton and Prince William are regal and polished, they are simply mummy and dad to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

In fact, the Duchess of Cambridge has some really adorable nicknames for her kiddos. Though she has one endearing term she uses for all three of her kiddos –she has a super sweet nickname for Princess Charlotte.

Recently, Middleton and Prince William took a surprise 2-day trip to Northern Ireland. While chatting with a group of well-wishers, the duchess revealed the adorable nickname she has for Princess Charlotte. Belfast-based blogger Laura-Ann was there with her son George who handed Middleton a bouquet of flowers.

According to Laura-Anna, the duchess told George that he had a “really cool name.” The duchess then asked Laura-Ann how old her other son was. According to Laura-Ann, after hearing that he is 4 years old, the duchess replied, “Oh! He’s the same age as Lottie.” How adorable is Lottie for a nickname?

Lottie isn’t Princess Charlotte’s only nickname. Just before Christmas 2018, Duchess Kate Middleton was spotted at a store is located in Norfolk near the queen’s Sandringham estate where the family was spending the holiday. A shopper named Sarah Daniels told The Express that she overheard the adorable nickname Middleton used for the young royals. She said,  “As I was looking at the shelves I noticed a tall dark-haired lady further down the aisle and thought to myself ‘I recognize that face.”

According to the 43-year-old teacher, at one point Princess Charlotte sat down on the floor in the aisle before her mother said to her, “Get up, poppet.” Daniels then recalled that George asked his mom if they could buy dinosaur slime and Middleton then called her son “poppet” as well.

Princess Charlotte’s full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Charlotte is the feminine version of her grandfather’s name, Charles. Charlotte is also her aunt, Pippa Middleton’s middle name. Of course, Elizabeth is a nod to her great-grandmother, the queen. Finally, Diana is a tribute to the late Princess Diana, Princess Charlotte’s grandmother. When addressed formally, the princess’ name is Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
