Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton have been married since 2011, and they have three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis together. Though the future King of England and the duchess seem all grown up and regal now –the college sweethearts have their own sordid love story full of steamy nights and tabloid covers.

Prince William and Middleton met in 2001 just before they began their first year at St. Andrew’s University. When they first connected, the pair were just friends. In fact, the duchess once pretended to be Prince William’s girlfriend well before they began dating.

Why did Kate Middleton pretend to be Prince William’s girlfriend before they began dating?

Prince William has always seemed relaxed and level headed. However, the eldest son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana has been in the spotlight since his birth — which means he’s had to deal with fake friends and women who were more interested in his status then who he is as a person. In fact, back in college before they were a couple, Kate Middleton saved her future hubby from a particularly thirsty co-ed.

In her book, Kate: The Future Queen, royal expert and biographer Katie Nicholl –spoke with the prince and duchess’ former classmate, Laura Warshauer, who shared a story about Middleton pretending to be the prince’s girlfriend. Warshauer remembered,

Kate and I were eating brownies. Kate was never a big drinker, she didn’t need alcohol to give her confidence. Will was getting really hit on by this girl at the party, and it was getting quite uncomfortable because he couldn’t shake her off. He was being really polite, but this girl just didn’t get the hint. All of a sudden, Kate came up behind him and put her arms around him. He said, ‘Oh, sorry, but I’ve got a girlfriend,’ and he and Kate went off giggling. He mouthed, ‘Thanks sos much,’ to her in a really exaggerated way, but Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done that. And that was just a month after we started university.

When did Kate Middleton and Prince William finally begin dating?

Prince William and Kate Middleton finally made things official on a super steamy night during their second semester of freshman year. Initially, the pair were just friends, and they even dated other people. However, by the end of their second quarter things shifted. The future King of England saw Middleton walking in one of the university’s fashion shows, and he was smitten. He later cornered her at a party, and the pair shared a kiss, officially changing their relationship forever.

Have Prince William and Kate Middleton ever broken up?

Though the royal couple seems like the picture of perfection, they’ve had a couple of bumps in their relationship. In fact, they’ve broken up twice. By 2003 –two years into their relationship, both Middleton and the prince were having doubts. Nicholl wrote, “Kate was beginning to question William’s commitment to their relationship, and she also had her own creeping doubts about their future after St Andrew’s.” In the end, Middleton and Prince William would split briefly in 2004.

The pair split again in 2007 after a series of blunders including the prince messing up the Christmas holidays and the duchess’ 25th birthday. The final straw came when Prince William was photographed touching one girl inappropriately and flirting with other at Elements nightclub in Bournemouth. Middleton pulled the plug on their relationship after seeing the photos in the newspaper.
