Kate Middleton and Prince William: 7 Photos of the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge at Sporting Events
With sporting events canceled because of the coronavirus, we’re reminiscing on days when we could socialize with friends and family while cheering on our favorite teams. We’re also bummed to be seeing less of the British royal family so we combined the two to pull double-duty. Ahead, check out seven times Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge showed up to major sporting events.
They celebrated a gold medal win
During the 2012 Olympic Games held in London, England, William and Catherine gave the public a rare show of PDA when they embraced after athletes from Great Britain took home a gold medal and set a new world record in the Men’s Team Sprint Track Cycling event.
Prince William and Kate Middleton cheered on Olympic swimmers
On Aug. 3, 2012, one day after watching their home team take home first place, William and Catherine returned to the Olympics. This time they watched the swimming finals.
Photographers captured what must’ve been an intense moment during the event. William clapped while Catherine covered her eyes. From the looks on their faces, it appears to be a close race.
They did the wave
Taking a break from the rigors of life as senior working royals, Catherine and William watched Great Britain’s Andy Murray and Spain’s Nicolas Almagro compete against each other at the 2012 Olympics. They even joined in with the rest of the crowd to do the wave.
This wasn’t the first time the two were seen doing the wave. In 2007, the then-boyfriend-girlfriend went to a rugby match between England and Italy with some friends where they also did the wave.
Prince William and Kate Middleton got really into a field hockey game
While attending the Commonwealth Games in 2014, William and Catherine watched a field hockey game between Wales and Scotland. Sitting next to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex cameras caught their reactions to a play on the field.
The couple went to Wimbledon
In keeping with the royal family tradition of attending Wimbledon, Catherine and William went in 2014 to watch the final Men’s Singles match between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
They cheered and were very animated throughout the entire match. In recent years, Catherine has attended Wimbledon with her sister-in-law, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex to watch Serena Williams, a close friend of Meghan’s, compete.
They took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to a soccer game
Probably wanting to pass on their love of sports to their kids, William and Catherine went to a soccer game with their two oldest children, Prince George of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge on Oct. 5, 2019, where they watched a Premier League match between Norwich City and Aston Villa.
They were seen sitting in the stands while their youngest, Prince Louis of Cambridge, born in April 2018, probably stayed at home. George wore a jersey in support of Aston Villa and can be seen standing on his feet clapping. How cute!
Here’s hoping we’ll see more photos of royals at sporting events soon.
