Kate Middleton Told All of Her Friends to Stop Calling Her This Name

Since marrying Prince William, Kate Middleton has gone by many names. There is, of course, her first name and her maiden name. She’s also known as the Duchess of Cambridge and is referred to as the Countess of Strathearn in Scotland and Northern Ireland. But there’s one name that William’s bride didn’t want to stick and she reportedly emailed all of her friends to let them know not to call her that anymore.

Here’s what name that was, plus what her husband calls her and what the whole world will call her when William is king.

What name Middleton asked her friends to stop calling her

A report from The Express claims that when Middleton felt that Prince William was getting close to proposing to her she told all her closest pals not to call her “Kate” (short for her first name) anymore. Columnist Adam Helliker told the publication that Middleton requested that they call her “Catherine” instead.

“With Prince William’s engagement now a surefire certainty (even Ladbrokes has stopped taking bets on whether it will happen after a flurry of well-placed wagers) there are intriguing signs that Kate Middleton is preparing for her future role,” Helliker wrote at the time. “It looks like she’s taking it very seriously indeed too. I hear that in the past few weeks the former accessories buyer has quietly informed friends that she would like to drop the informal ‘Kate’ and in future wishes to be known by her full name: Catherine.”

Royal expert Daniela Elser added that the request was done via email and Middleton was reportedly “gentle” about it but still, her friends were a little surprised.

The report also claims that the future duchess asked this of her pals because royal protocol is to be referred to by your full name and Catherine was considered more “dignified” than Kate.

Many royal fans know that William does not call his wife Kate. When he talks about her in public he uses her full name, Catherine, but her husband has also been heard calling her by some sweet pet names.

Attendants at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2016 said that William referred to her as “darling.”

Margaret Knight, shared with Hello! that the prince stopped to look at poppies and asked the duchess, “Could you make one of these, darling?’”

In the past, voicemails between the couple were leaked revealing that William used to have a more unique name for her. The Daily Mail noted that in those recordings the future king said, “Oh, my little babykins! I hope you are all right.”

When William is crowned king, the whole world will be calling the duchess by a different name.

Once the Duke of Cambridge ascends the throne his bride will be known as Queen Catherine.

Royal Musings founder Marlene Koenig told Hello! magazine that Middleton will be a queen and not a princess consort because “the wife of the king is by tradition a queen.”
