All of these questions and more are usually running through the head of anyone that is about to meet their partner’s family for the first time.

Now, imagine that your new partner’s family is one of the most famous families in the world. All of those fears would probably be multiplied by a million.

For Kate Middleton, meeting her boyfriend’s family for the first time was not the hard part. She has such a charming personality and natural charisma. However, when you are having to impress the royal family, it is not just the first impression that you need to worry about. To the royal family, image is everything. So, when you are suddenly thrust into the spotlight, you have to make sure that you are projecting a good image at all times.

Kate Middleton did a fairly good job at “looking the part” when she was out in public after she and William started dating. Kate even said that it had stung to hear her future grandmother-in-law criticized her over this one thing. So what was it about Kate that the queen was so critical about? Keep reading to find out.

Before Kate and William started dating, she may have been considered “just a commoner,” but she had actually come from a fairly wealthy family. When Kate was just a child, her mom and dad ditched their jobs at an airline in order to start their own party supplies company. Their new company gained an impressive amount of success. Kate and her two siblings were able to attend the best schools and have everything that they could ever want.

In fact, before she had attended St. Andrews University (where she met Prince William), she had spent a few months in Italy. She learned about art and enjoyed all that Florence, Italy had to offer. This included going to nice restaurants and frequenting the local bar with her friends.

After she started dating William, she continued to enjoy the lavish lifestyle that she had grown accustomed to. She and William would often take vacations to luxurious ski resorts and stay at the best hotels that money could buy. When she wasn’t taking extravagant vacations, she would often be seen having fun with her friends at some of the most high-end bars in town.

Queen Elizabeth II criticized Kate Middleton’s lifestyle

Kate may have been having a good time, but she quickly realized that when you represent the royal family, you cannot do the same things as other people in their early twenties would do, especially if the country is facing an overwhelming amount of hardship.

While she was enjoying lavish vacations with her prince, the rest of the country was in the middle of a devastating recession. The queen thought that it did not look good for Kate Middleton to be so open about spending large amounts of money on a regular basis because the rest of the country was facing financial trouble.

Kate was bothered by the queen’s criticism

According to the royal biographer, Katie Nicholls, Kate felt a “sting” when she heard that the queen had criticized her lifestyle. In order to ensure that the rest of the country did not think that negatively of her, Kate went against the advice of the royal palace and posted a picture of herself working for her parents. Nicholls had stated that the picture “was deemed a step too far and within weeks it had been removed.”

Queen Elizabeth II may have criticized her future granddaughter-in-law, but she had also given her some very good advice to help ensure that the public did not think negatively of Kate. She suggested that it would be a good idea for Kate to get involved with a charity. Not long after that, Kate became very active in helping the charity, Starlight, which works with terminally ill children.

Today, Kate is known to many around the world for the amount of time that she selflessly dedicates to charity. In addition to Starlight, she is now a part of several different charities that help people combat a wide range of hardships.
