Kate Winslet Dodges Question About Working With Woody Allen Despite Allegations

Winslet worked with the director on Wonder Wheel despite the allegations against him

In a new interview, Kate Winslet avoided talking about her decision to work with Woody Allen on his new movie despite the fact that he has been accused of molesting his daughter.

Winslet was interviewed by Variety this week, and she was asked about whether she considered the sexual abuse allegations against Woody Allen before agreeing to work with him. Winslet did not wish to answer. She said only said, “It’s just a difficult discussion. I’d rather respectfully not enter it today.”

The actress, who stars in Woody Allen’s latest project Wonder Wheel, had previously been criticized for comments in September that she doesn’t know what went on with Allen and his daughter and that it doesn’t matter anyway.

“Of course one thinks about it,” Winslet told The New York Times regarding the Woody Allen accusations. “But at the same time, I didn’t know Woody and I don’t know anything about that family. As the actor in the film, you just have to step away and say, I don’t know anything, really, and whether any of it is true or false. Having thought it all through, you put it to one side and just work with the person. Woody Allen is an incredible director. So is Roman Polanski. I had an extraordinary working experience with both of those men, and that’s the truth.”

In recent weeks, Kate Winslet has faced questions about why she condemned Harvey Weinstein but agreed to work with Woody Allen, despite the fact that Allen’s daughter Dylan Farrow says that he molested her when she was seven years old. This is not something that Allen has ever been charged for, but it has certainly made other actors question whether they should support him by starring in his films.

For example, actor Griffin Newman recently had a small role in an upcoming Woody Allen movie (his next film after Wonder Wheel), and he recently said on Twitter that he deeply regrets the decision to work with Allen, who he believes is guilty of sexual abuse. Newman also decided to donate his entire salary from the movie to RAINN, the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network.

Woody Allen’s new movie comes out in December, but it has already generated its fair share of controversy, especially considering it reportedly features a relationship between a middle-aged man and a 15-year-old girl. In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Woody Allen said that he worries this will turn into a witch hunt; Allen later walked back these statements.

Although Winslet did not wish to discuss the allegations against Woody Allen today, this is unlikely to be the last time she is a question about that, and in light of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Allen’s own history is guaranteed to be a major topic heading into the release of Wonder Wheel on Dec. 1.
