Katherine Schwarzenegger Shares on Finding the ‘Right Person’ with Chris Pratt on ‘Today with Hoda and Jenna’

Hoda Kotb of Today with Hoda and Jenna has had several guest hosts to fill in for Jenna Bush Hager, who has been on maternity leave since August. Joining her this week was Maria Shriver along with her daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger, who recently tied the knot with actor Chris Pratt. The newlywed shared some of her thoughts with Kotb and Shriver on dating and finally meeting the man she ended up marrying.

According to People, Shriver knew Pratt through mutual friends and introduced her daughter to the actor. Pratt and Schwarzenegger were first spotted as a couple on Father’s Day in 2018. Though the two tried to keep their budding romance private, plenty of photos of the couple were published in print and on social media.

Schwarzenegger and Pratt tied the knot in June. The wedding took place in Montecito, California, in front of close friends and family, according to People. “Yesterday was the best day of our lives! We became husband and wife in front of God, our families and those we love. It was intimate, moving and emotional. We feel so blessed to begin this new chapter of our lives. We are so thankful to our families and our friends who stood with us,” the couple wrote in a statement, as reported by People.

Pratt was previously married to actress Anna Faris. The two separated in 2017 and were officially divorced in October 2018. This is the first marriage for Schwarzenegger.

Mother of the bride

Shriver talked about her daughter’s nuptials when she was a guest host on Today in June, and how Schwarzenegger wanted her to share minimal details about the event. “She’s like, ‘Don’t say anything. Don’t say where I am. Don’t say what it was like. Don’t speak,’” Shriver said. “I was like I actually am a person, too. I actually had an experience, as well and can speak about my own experience.”

The Today guest host shared that it was an eye-opening experience for her as being the bride’s mom. “As a mother, you go through many emotions, right, so you’re trying to be both excited, you get a new member of your family, you’re kind of losing your child as they were,” she revealed. “So you’re kind of excited and everybody’s like, ‘Well, isn’t this great?’ You’re like, ‘Yeah, it’s great,’ but it’s also kind of sad and it’s kind of strange and so you’re learning, as I said, to hold all of these multiple emotions simultaneously.”

The dating game

While talking on Today with Hoda and Jenna, Schwarzenegger opened up about having to go through some unsuccessful dating experiences while searching for ‘the one.’ “You don’t know what’s going on [and] wonder why certain things are happening in your life and then later they make sense and you’re like, ‘That’s exactly why.’ It’s a struggle, I think, to wait, to figure out why that was happening,” she said, according to Today. “When you’re in the moment, you’re just very focused on getting through it and defeating it. And then when you’re able to actually see and realize why you go through something, it’s the best.”

Her mom interjected, commenting with a laugh, “”She was saying, ‘I waded through all these guys to finally find Chris (Pratt).’” Schwarzenegger replied, laughing back. “All these guys, mom?”

The newlywed went on to share that now that she’s happily married, she can understand why all the other situations didn’t amount to anything substantial. “With dating, with anything that you do, it’s like you have all these experiences — sometimes can be really challenging,” Schwarzenegger said. “And then especially with, you know, finding someone that you’re gonna spend the rest of your life with, you find them and you’re like, that’s exactly why past things didn’t work out.”

Shriver commented soon after her daughter’s wedding on the impact of finding love. “Love is this great unifier,” she said, according to Today. “Everybody looks at love and goes, ‘You know, I want that.’ It’s so great. So that’s the kind of big takeaway, how incredible love is, how it can change your life, how it can make you feel on top of the world. And that if you don’t have it, it can make you feel like ‘Ugh’ or it can make you feel just really happy for the other person. Everybody’s having their own experience and I had all of that.”
