Mother of the bride
The former talk show host posted another engagement announcement over the weekend. Her daughter Cassidy is now headed down the aisle to wed boyfriend Ben Wierda.
“So thrilled to announce that my beautiful daughter, @cassidygiff is engaged to a wonderful man, Ben @letsgetwierda,” Gifford wrote on Instagram alongside a pic of the beaming couple. “Still can’t stop sop [sic] smiling!! My kids ARE SO HAPPY!! Makes me one HAPPY MAMA.”
Since the news literally just broke, a wedding date has yet to be set.
From mom to friend
Cody and Cassidy are Gifford’s children from her decades-long marriage to NFL Hall of Famer Frank Gifford. The former Today co-host has openly shared about her struggle with loneliness since becoming a widow and an empty nester, both which were shortly followed by the death of her mother.
“You battle a lot of things when you get older, especially as a widow, when you lose a spouse,” she said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “It dawned on me the other day, I’m a widow, I’m an orphan because my mother also passed and I’m an empty nester all at the same time. If you’re not careful, what you’ve lost in life can define you. It’s so much healthier to be defined by what you still have. I’m making big changes in my life because I need to, really big changes that are feeding my soul. Otherwise, despair sets in and loneliness can be crippling.”
Gifford went on to reveal that she had to make changes in order to fulfill herself, and that included taking herself out of certain social situations that consisted mostly of couples. “I had to make moves and spiritual moves. You gotta make new memories or the old ones are going to kill you,” Gifford shared. “When you’re part of a couple, you don’t realize that the whole world is just made up of couples. And all of a sudden, you’re that odd number at a dinner party. You’re the fifth, seventh, ninth person at the table. They’re always making an adjustment for you.”
Now with her new home in Nashville and a host of upcoming professional projects, Gifford is loving life down South. “There’s a different culture down there. It’s a culture of kindness in Nashville,” she said, according to People. “They are authentically kind. They are joyful, they have so much fun. I wake up and there are church bells ringing all around me. It’s just a different attitude.”
With her children are grown and living in a different state, Gifford realizes that her place in their life has evolved. “They’re both great human beings who realized that their mama needs them now more than they need me,” she said. “They come home a lot, and it means the world to me,” Gifford said, as reported by People. “When your children ultimately become your dear friends, you know you’ve made a switch in the relationship.”
Congrats to the Gifford family on the happy news!
