Kathy Bates recently unveiled some major weight loss. The actress is down roughly 60 pounds from her heaviest weight — but she said it wasn’t easy. According to Bates, there was one specific technique that helped her get to where she is today.
Bates said she was diagnosed with lymphedema years ago
Bates’ health hasn’t always been a walk in the park. She’s had cancer two times, but she has successfully beaten the disease both times. Back in 2003, Bates learned she had ovarian cancer. She underwent treatment that same year, and she was back to work in 2004. Then, less than a decade later, the disease struck again. After the show Bates had starred on (Harry’s Law) was canceled, she felt concerning abdominal symptoms. Doctors ran some tests, and Bates learned she had breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy in 2012, and though she was able to beat cancer for the second time, it left her with lymphedema. Lymphedema is severe swelling in the arms, legs, and chest that can occur after surgery. Bates said it played a role in her weight problems.
She unveiled a 60-pound weight loss and she credits ‘mindfulness’ for dropping the weight
While Bates was at the WebMD Health Heroes event in New York City in January, she did an interview with Us Weekly discussing her dramatic weight loss. She credited mindfulness for helping her lose so much weight. “… When you’re eating, you have this involuntary sigh and that’s really your brain and your stomach communicating that you’ve had enough,” she told the magazine. “The trick is to pay attention to that and push your plate away.” It seems easy enough, but it actually takes a lot of work to train your brain not to overeat.
The actress said it took a few years to lose the weight
Bates stressed that she didn’t lose all that weight overnight. She specifically said it took determination, not will power, to remind herself to focus on when she was full and not eat too much. She also cut out certain weaknesses, such as sweet soda beverages and junk food. She also noted that she’s in the best health she’s ever been in. “I feel like a completely different person,” she said. “I just wish I had done it years ago.”
Bates is best known for her roles in films such as ‘Misery,’ ‘Titanic,’ and ‘On the Basis of Sex’
Bates may be in the news for her weight loss now, but she’s had some pretty talked-about movie roles in the past. She starred in “Misery” in 1990, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She also had an important role in “Titanic,” one of the highest-grossing films of all time. And recently, she starred in “On the Basis of Sex,” which detailed the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Overall, she feels much better after having lost the weight than she has in a long time.
