The video showed Joyce in her hospital bed while people sang to her. It also featured photos of Joyce, including one of the two siblings with their mother, Maggie Griffin.
Here are some facts we know about Joyce Griffin.
Joyce was Kathy’s only sister. The two sisters also had three brothers: Kenny, Gary, and John. Joyce was the second oldest child in the family.
She was born to first-generation Irish immigrants Mary Margaret “Maggie” Griffin and John Patrick Griffin. She grew up in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Ill. The two sisters shared a room growing up, Kathy mentioned in a 2015 interview with Wall Street Journal.
Her brother Gary also passed away from cancer, in 2014. Gary was the third oldest child in the family, born after Joyce. He was battling stage-four esophageal cancer and died at age 63. Kathy posted on Instagram after his passing, “This AM my brave brother Gary Griffin passed away in palliative care after a brutal struggle w cancer. Oh & he was funny as s—.”
Kathy Griffin shaved her head to show solidarity with Joyce. Kathy shed her long red locks when Joyce was undergoing chemotherapy in July. Photos were shared on social media at the time. One shows a bald Kathy with mom Maggie. The other shows the comedian smiling and rubbing her shaven head.
