Katy Perry: 15 Outfits That Are Completely Insane
Katy Perry has some powerful songs that call for big performances. That often means having an over-the-top costume to match. The pop star has seemingly covered every theme possible when it comes to outfits, from candy to voting ballots. This has led to some memorable fashion moments over the years. Some of these moments happened on stage while she was performing while others occurred on the red carpet.
So what are the craziest looks Katy Perry has rocked over the years? And how has her style transformed throughout her music career? We decided to pick out 15 of the star’s most insane outfits.
1. Artisanal dress
The pop star is often seen in bright and upbeat outfits when she’s performing. But Perry went in a more creepy direction with this themed number. She decided to wear head-to-toe in red tulle at the Met Gala in 2017. The theme was Rei Kawakubo/Comme de Garçons: Art of the In-Between so she went with the red Maison Margiela Artisanal outfit.
Perry was certainly one of the most memorable celebrities at the event and many were torn on whether it was one of the best or worst outfits of the night. No matter what, it did fit the theme. Rei Kawakubo has multiple red and bold designs, so the outfit pays homage perfectly to the event’s honoree.
2. Cathedral of Monreale gown
Once again the pop star went bold for the Met Gala. This time she wore a Dolce & Gabbana dress that had Sicily’s Cathedral of Monreale on the front. It’s a pretty intricate design and is stunning. Of course, Perry had to top it off with a gold crown.
3. Graffiti dress
For the China: Through the Looking Glass Met Gala, the singer wore a dress by Jeremy Scott for Moschino and had Jeremy Scott as her date. The crazy design of the dress led to many headlines but not solely because of the graffiti look. Scott was accused of stealing the design.
Brooklyn graffiti artist, Joseph Tierney sued Moschino and claimed they stole his art to create the outfits. According to Page Six, Tierney claimed it used graphics from his 2012 Detroit mural. The parties ended up settling the case.
4. Fire outfit
Everyone remembers Left Shark from the Super Bowl halftime show, but we shouldn’t forget about Perry’s fire dress. She started off the show on what appeared to be a robotic lion while wearing a fire costume.
That dress is definitely one for the books.
5. Cowgirl costume
It’s obvious that the singer was trying to go with the country theme, but this stage outfit is all over the place. The cow patterned belt and fishnet stockings really take away from what she was going for with the cowgirl dress shirt.
6. Ballot dress
The pop star hardly goes for subtle. So when she performed at a campaign rally for Barack Obama she decided to show her support by wearing a dress that looked like a filled out voting ballot. She, of course, selected who she is voting for.
7. Pink-themed costume
Perry performed “The One That Got Away” on stage at the awards show and decided to wear head-to-toe bubble gum pink. The performance was actually pretty stripped down, but once again, it was her outfit that reminded you she is anything but boring.
8. Glow in the dark outfit
While touring, the performer wore a matching top and skirt set that glowed in the dark. That’s certainly one way to make sure your audience will be able to spot you.
9. Snowman costume
Once again the pop star shows that she’s not scared to dress for a theme. Perry dressed up as a snowman at KIIS-FM’s Jingle Ball.
10. Britney Spears homage dress
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake dressed in matching denim outfits for the 2001 American Music Awards. It was terrible and yet iconic.
Perry decided to pay homage to the duo at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
11. Nutcracker costume
Once again the singer performed during the holiday season and decided to go with a themed outfit. This time she dressed up as a cute nutcracker for the 2010 Z100 Jingle Ball.
12. Movie-themed dress
The pop star performed to celebrate her documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me. But of course she couldn’t use just any costume to celebrate the film, she needed one with a movie theme. In this instance, that meant popcorn and a movie reel bustier. It’s definitely a fun look.
13. Rainbow look
Back when Perry was still rocking colorful wigs, she chose this bright costume. This look matches the rainbow theme and shows that she’s not afraid to have fun with fashion.
14. Geisha costume
The performer made the controversial choice to dress like a geisha for her performance of, “Unconditionally.” The costume was considered racist by some, and the star was accused of cultural appropriation for the look.
15. Firework costume
Leave it to Perry to wear a firework costume to match her song titled “Firework.” This look was more like a bodysuit, which is fitting since she was performing at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
