Kealia Ohai Is Not Just JJ Watt’s Fiancée, She Is a Sports Star Too
Houston Texans superstar J.J. Watt and his girlfriend, Kealia Ohai, got engaged in the spring of 2019 after dating for over three years. The couple announced the exciting news on Twitter, which has brought quite a bit of attention to the soccer star. Between her successful career in professional sports to her interesting family history, here is everything we know about Ohai.
Inside Ohai’s childhood
Kealia Ohai was born in Utah, but her dad is actually from Hawaii. One of his favorite places in the world is Kauai’s Kealia Beach, which is where she gets her name.
It is unclear when Ohai’s family moved to the states, but she spent most of her childhood in Draper, Utah. It might not compare to Hawaii, but at least Ohai got to experience all four seasons growing up.
Although Kealia Ohai went on to enjoy a successful career in professional sports, fans may be surprised to learn that she is actually half-blind.
Ohai has to wear a corrective lens because she is legally blind in her right eye. That, of course, has not stopped her from becoming an amazing athlete, though it is a pretty rare condition.
A look at Kealia Ohai’s soccer career
Medical issues aside, Ohai landed a scholarship to play for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her sister, Megan Ohai, also played at the collegiate soccer level, though she chose to attend a University in California.
According to TV Over Mind, she also took home four state titles for Utah and was one of the top prospects going into college.
During her time as a Tar Heel, Kealia Ohai led the team to an NCAA National Championship. What’s interesting is that her sister also won a championship at her university. Talk about talented siblings.
Needless to say, Ohai is very good at soccer and was selected as the second overall pick in the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League. She landed a spot on the Houston Dash, though she was recently traded to the Chicago Red Stars.
Ohai’s talented family
As previously noted, Ohai has an older sister who played soccer at the University of Southern California. Although Kealia Ohai’s older sis helped her team with the 2007 NCAA championship, she did not go on to have a successful career in the pros.
She did, however, tie the knot with Brian Cushing, who used to play for the NFL. The two met in college and share two children.
Cushing played for the Houston Texans and is now one of the team’s strength coaches. He is good friends with Watt and is the one responsible for introducing him to Ohai.
J.J. Watt and Kealia Ohai announce their engagement
After dating for over three years, Watt popped the big question during a romantic vacation in Mexico.
Watt and Ohai both posted the exciting news on Twitter and fans were quick to express their support for the adorable couple.
“I’m the luckiest man in the world. #SheSaidYes,” Watt wrote, to which Ohai added, “I love you.”
The Texans star went public with his romance back in 2016. At the time, he was caught attending a few Dash games and later wore Kealia Ohai’s jersey during a post-game press conference.
Despite the high-profile nature of their relationship, Watt and Ohai have kept things very low-key. Apart from the occasional social media post, they are rarely spotted in public together.
Ohai got traded to the Chicago Red Stars
While Ohai and Watt are looking forward to exchanging vows, they recently faced an unexpected hurdle in their marriage plans.
At the start of the year, Kealia Ohai confirmed the news that the Dash had just traded her to the Red Stars. She posted the announcement on social media and seemed to be excited about the change.
“Extremely excited to be a Red Star!! Can’t wait to get to work @ChicagoRedStars,” Ohai wrote.
Watt was quick to repost Ohai’s Instagram announcement and added that he cannot wait to see her on her new team. The coach of the Red Stars was also thrilled by the trade and is looking forward to seeing Ohai on the field.
J.J. Watt and Kealia Ohai have not announced an official wedding date, but the ceremony is believed to be planned for some time in 2020. It is unclear if her trade to Chicago will impact their wedding date, but we hope to learn more in the coming months.
