Keanu Reeves Might Be One Step Closer to Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Is Keanu Reeves finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Marvel (along with every other studio on the planet) has been trying to snag Reeves for a part in the MCU for several years. Nothing official has been confirmed, but The Matrix star just took a big step towards joining the Marvel family.

Reeves teams up with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ director Joe Russo

After witnessing what some are calling a career revival, the John Wick star has become one of the hottest actors in Hollywood. And Marvel is eager to cash in on Reeves’ popularity.

Marvel president Kevin Feige has been very open about his attempts to woo Reeves, though the studio has yet to find a role that fits him perfectly. While Keanu Reeves has not landed a part in the MCU just yet, his collaboration with Endgame director Joe Russo puts him one step closer to that goal.

According to We Got This Covered, Reeves and Russo are set to team up for a movie as part of the director’s new production company, ABGO. The project is titled Past Midnight and Russo opened up about the film while promoting his other movie, 21 Bridges.

Russo did not reveal much about the film, which he says is still in the “formative stage.” He did, however, assure fans that the script is amazing, and we are confident Reeves is going to crush it.

When will Keanu Reeves join the MCU?

We do not know when Past Midnight will start production, but the fact that Reeves is working with Russo is a good sign that he is on his way to joining the MCU.

Apart from directing Endgame with his brother, Anthony Russo, the director is working with several MCU stars on other projects. This includes Chadwick Boseman in 21 Bridges and Tom Holland in a movie called Cherry.

The bad news is that we might not hear anything about Keanu Reeves joining the MCU for quite some time. The studio is busy working on the first few projects of Phase 4, all of which have already been cast.

The next movie in Marvel’s lineup is Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, followed by The Eternals, with Angelia Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, and Kit Harington.

Reeves, meanwhile, is set to star in several movies in 2019, including Bill & Ted Face the Music and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.

Inside Marvel’s obsession with Reeves

Considering Keanu Reeves’ cult-like following on the internet and his impressive career in Hollywood, it is evident why Marvel wants him to accept a major role in the MCU.

In a recent interview, Feige revealed that he talks with Reeves every time a new project is in the works to see if there is a part that fits him. So far, the studio has come back empty-handed, but they are definitely working to bring him on board.

“We talk to him for almost every film we make,” Feige stated. “We talk to Keanu Reeves…I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it.”

Feige compared landing Keanu Reeves to the process it took to get Jake Gyllenhaal to agree to a part. Marvel asked Gyllenhaal on several occasions to join the team before finding the perfect character for him in Mysterio.

For a reference, Marvel originally wanted Gyllenhaal to play the part of Peter Parker way back in 2003. It may have taken Marvel well over a decade to get it done, but they eventually found the perfect match for Gyllenhaal.

What’s up next for Keanu Reeves?

While we wait to hear more on the MCU front, Reeves has a busy year of filming ahead of him.

The actor has already agreed to reprise his role as the eponymous hitman in John Wick 4, which will open in theaters in 2021.

He is also currently working on Bill & Ted Face the Music and is expected to start work on the new Matrix movie in the coming year. Needless to say, Reeves has been a busy man and his schedule is another prohibiting factor in him joining the MCU.

We can only hope that Marvel can ink out a deal with Reeves in the near future before it is too late.

Keanu Reeves has not commented on the rumors surrounding his joining the MCU.
