Kelly Ripa Receives Backlash For Posting A Video That Seems To Make Light of the Coronavirus

Kelly Ripa of Live with Kelly & Ryan is very active on social media. Between posting flirty messages to her husband Mark Consuelos, giving details on their three kids Michael, Lola, and Joaquin, or showing her latest workout preference, the morning talk show host often updates her Instagram followers with the latest goings-on from her day to day life.

Ripa is receiving some negative feedback on a recent video she put up getting a procedure done at the dermatologist, where some felt her post was ill-timed and a bit tone deaf.

Ripa’s botox adventures

The television personality has been open in the past about receiving cosmetic injections, favoring a routine of botox. In 2016, she shared with viewers an unpleasant experience she had when undergoing the regimen.

“I’m going to tell you a story I’ve never told anyone,” she said at the time, according to People. “I got bad Botox about … what was it, a year ago? And it was bad. It did something to my good side, so then I had two bad sides. I’m not kidding!”

The former All My Children star didn’t give too many details at the time, except that the bad effects were finally wearing off.

“I’m starting to look myself again, but there was about a six-month period where people were like: ‘What’s wrong with Kelly? She doesn’t smile anymore,’” Ripa said. “And I was like: ‘I am smiling!’”

Sharing a Botox appointment

Last week, Ripa documented her visit with her dermatologist, Dr. Robert Anolik, when she was about to receive a Botox treatment. The doctor greeted viewers by alluding to a current health issue.

“Hi everyone. We’re going to talk about a certain medical problem,” Anolik said in the selfie video with Ripa sitting in the patient chair.

Ripa took over for her lines. “Yes, there’s a very serious medical problem going around right now,” she said. “What is it?”

“It’s Botox deficiency,” Anolik replied. “Acute!” Ripa interjected, with the doctor adding, “A lot of side effects. Lines, wrinkles.”

Ripa commented on the stress the country is currently under, jokingly stating that it has given her more wrinkles. “In this time we can notice that there’s been a lot of worrying, you can see it is written all over my face, but Dr. Anolik decided to be brave today and come into work to treat my acute Botox deficiency syndrome,” she said.

The playful banter continued throughout the video, where after Ripa received her Botox treatment, she made a few more attempts at humor. “What do you think? Did I survive? Is there any Botox left for anyone else doctor?” she asked, where her dermatologist replied, “We used it all up, hopefully there won’t be a shortage.”

Bad timing?

Due to the current coronavirus crisis with the nation in lockdown and a shortage of everyday supplies, many felt that Ripa’s video was insensitive.

@kellyripa are you tone deaf? Ill advised comment on Botox while seemingly making light of corona virus,” one wrote on Twitter. “Most people are worried about how to stay well…rather than reducing the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles.”

“Leave it to Hollywood to joke about the #coronavirus,” another tweeted. “@KellyRipa makes light of the virus, which has killed thousands, while she gets Botox.”

“Kelly Ripa making jokes that allude to Coronavirus while getting Botox is insensitive,” another follower posted. “I think she blew it here.”

Ripa has not yet commented on the negative feedback.
