Kelly Ripa Turns 50: The ‘Live’ Host’s Popular TV Roles
Live with Kelly and Ryan host Kelly Ripa has been known for her work on the morning talk show for nearly 20 years now, encompassing most of her career. But before she landed the gig, Ripa was an actor — and in the years since, she’s continued to work in Hollywood. In honor of her 50th birthday on Oct. 2, 2020, here’s a look at Ripa’s past acting roles.
Haley Vaughan in ‘All My Children’
Ripa’s first acting job was on the long-running soap opera All My Children. She began her role as Haley Vaughan, a young woman with a bit of an edge. Ripa starred in the series for more than a decade, until she got the gig on Live. She later returned for a small arc in 2010, in honor of the shows 40th anniversary.
The series was an important one for Ripa for a number of reasons. Not only did it kick off her career, but it’s where she met her husband, Mark Consuelos, who played her love interest, Mateo Santos. Ripa received two Daytime Emmy nominations for her role of Haley and won two Soap Opera Digest awards.
Jennifer Bradley in ‘Ed’
Early in her hosting career, Ripa took on more acting jobs than in recent years. Among those was a guest arc on the NBC dramedy Ed. The series follows the titular character, who, after losing his job and finding out his wife is cheating on him on the same day, moves back to his hometown to open a law practice in a bowling alley.
Throughout the four-season series, Ed attempts to win over his high school crush, Carol. However, in the interim, he attracts the attention of other women. Among them is Ripa’s Jennifer Bradley. Ripa guest-starred in a season 2 episode before returning for a three-episode arc in season 3.
Faith Fairfield in ‘Hope & Faith’
Aside from All My Children, Ripa has only had one other main cast TV role. She starred in the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith as Faith Fairchild, one of the two eponymous sisters. The role was perfect for Ripa, as Faith is a former soap opera star, who moves in with her sister, Hope, and her family.
Hope & Faith aired on ABC for three seasons, from 2003-2006. Not only was Ripa working on Live during this time, but she had three young children at home: sons Michael and Joaquin, and daughter Lola. Joaquin was born just seven months before the series premiered.
Ms. Mulwray in ‘Riverdale’
After Hope & Faith was canceled, Ripa continued to act, albeit in much smaller roles. A number of her acting gigs have been voice roles, including a few episodes of American Housewife. Ripa has also made appearances as herself in shows like 30 Rock and Broad City.
During this time, Consuelos has also continued to act. He currently stars in the hit CW drama series Riverdale as the nefarious Hiram Lodge. Given they began their career working together, it’s not particularly surprising that Ripa made a guest appearance in a season 3 episode as Ms. Mulwray — Hiram’s mistress.
