A story recently came out about how Meghan Mark Markle and Prince Harry are planning on raising their baby as gender fluid. Shortly after, Kensington Palace gave a rare reply.

The original story

“Meghan has been talking to some of her friends about the birth and how she and Harry plan to raise their baby. Her exact word was fluid,” a source told Vanity Fair’s royal reporter Katie Nicholl. “She said they plan to raise their child with a fluid approach to gender and they won’t be imposing any stereotypes.”

The story went on to say the baby’s nursery will be designed in monochromatic shades of grey, whether the couple has a boy or a girl regardless.

How Harry and Meghan were raised

Both Harry and Prince William were raised playing with gendered toys: toy cars, soldiers, guns, etc. Markle has spoken about playing with Barbies as a child. Were they to raise their baby as the rumors state, that would mean they’d simply be giving their baby a choice to play with whatever toys they’d like to play with.

Multiple interpretations

The Vanity Fair article went on to say the term ‘fluid’ could be interpreted in a manner of ways.

“Exactly what the duchess might have meant when using the word “fluid” is unclear, and there are multiple possible interpretations. Last month actress Kate Hudson sparked a round of headlines when she said she was raising her daughter ‘genderless’ in an interview with AOL. She later clarified on Instagram that she meant raising her kids ‘to feel free to be exactly who they want to be,’ and that she used the phrase ‘genderless approach’ to refocus ‘the conversation in a direction that could exist outside of the female stereotype. It just felt a little antiquated to me. Not all girls want to be a princess, some want to be king,’” read the article.

The statement from Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace made a statement about how the royal couple will be raising the baby

Kensington Palace hardly addresses the stories that are written about the royal family, so when the palace speaks up it’s best to pay attention. In response to Vanity Fair’s source, the palace gave the following statement:

“This story is totally false,” said a spokesman on Saturday. Short, sweet, and to the point. Well, that takes care of that!

How Meghan and Harry will actually raise their child

In reality, the royal couple will probably raise their child similarly to how Kate and William raised their children.

“Daughter gets a dress, son gets pants. Of course, gender expression and letting a child explore their identity doesn’t just come down to what clothes parents buy them or what color they paint the nursery,” reports W Magazine. “It’s also important that the child feel loved and supported and that their choices are honored. And we the public can’t know if that’s happening until the royal kids are old enough to speak for themselves, which won’t be for years.”
