Kevin Smith Shares His Emotional Reaction to the New ‘Star Wars’ Teaser
Everyone has an opinion on Star Wars these days. While a vocal segment of fans continue to deride The Last Jedi, the saga is actually in a much better place right now. With the success of The Mandalorian and the Jedi: Fallen Order video game, Star Wars is pushing ahead into new territory at last.
Even as it does so, The Rise of Skywalker promises to pay off decades worth of storytelling. The film serves as the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, and the recent teaser Lucasfilm released plays up the cultural impact Star Wars has had. So, of course, filmmaker/podcaster Kevin Smith had a very visceral reaction to the two-minute footage.
One of the most famous ‘Star Wars’ fans
For those unfamiliar with Smith’s work, the director broke out in the 1990s with hits like Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma. Fundamental to his films — especially those prominently featuring his signature characters, Jay and Silent Bob — is a propensity for pop culture references. Given Smith’s own love for both Star Wars and Batman, those two properties tend to come up the most.
When Smith gave Jay and Silent Bob their own film, he even titled it Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, a not-so-subtle callback to the original Star Wars sequel. That film also features cameos from Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. So the “galaxy far, far away” is a common theme through nearly all of Smith’s films.
In addition to frequent Star Wars references in his work, Smith was famously paid a visit to The Force Awakens set. Director J.J. Abrams — who returns for The Rise of Skywalker — also gave him a brief voice cameo as a First Order stormtrooper. But Smith’s love for the saga and his own small involvement isn’t why he reacted so strongly to the new teaser.
Kevin Smith’s passionate response
This “special look” at The Rise of Skywalker doesn’t feature much in the way of new footage from the forthcoming film. Rather, it reminds viewers how much Star Wars has affected generations of moviegoers. Behind-the-scenes clips are incorporated, as are those from other projects which directly reference the saga.
But what really got Smith is the shot 57 seconds in. Taken from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the brief glimpse sees Silent Bob (Smith) grasping a lightsaber himself. In the film, Silent Bob makes his way to the set of the fictional Bluntman and Chronic movie, where he and Jay do battle with Hamill himself.
We can’t blame Smith for tweeting out such an emotional response to the clip. For fans the world over, Star Wars has been instrumental in shaping their opinion of cinema. Having the saga call back to Smith’s work is tantamount to Stan Lee reading the Mallrats script in Captain Marvel. Another cinematic universe Smith holds dear has tipped its hat to the filmmaker. We’d react emotionally too.
Will ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ live up to the hype?
Of course, the main objective of the new Star Wars teaser isn’t to make Smith cry. Its intended purpose is to drum up audience expectations for Abrams’ grand finale of the Skywalker saga. By sharing footage from over the years — including some of the late Carrie Fisher — the new teaser is likely to hit just about every Star Wars fan in the feels.
Still, The Rise of Skywalker might not please everyone. Endings to stories this beloved rarely do. With any luck though, Abrams and his team have cracked the narrative enough to avoid a backlash of The Last Jedi proportions. After all, The Rise of Skywalker will be the final Star Wars movie for at least a few years. Can it bring peace to the fandom? Please?
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
