Kiernan Shipka From ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’: Surprising Things You Don’t Know About Her
Kiernan Shipka has been in the business since she was 5 months old. At 19, she continues to impress as one of the best young actors in Hollywood. Here are a few things you might not know about the star.
She has a black belt in Taekwondo
To use the words of Shakespeare, though she be but little, she is fierce. At 5’2″, the star is usually not the tallest in the room. But the Sabrina star doesn’t let size get in the way. The actress holds a black belt in Taekwondo. She earned her belt in June 2012, meaning she was only 12 at the time. Talk about impressive.
You might recognize her as Jon Hamm’s daughter on ‘Mad Men’
Shipka auditioned for the role of Sally Draper when she was six years old. She went on to play the role for eight years. Show creator Matthew Weiner told W magazine that Shipka “was a kind of heartbeat for the show.” He went on to say, the only sequel to Mad Men that I can imagine is continuing the story of Sally Draper. I want to know what happens to her. And that is because of Kiernan.”
She’s a huge Riverdale fan …
Shipka told Seth Meyers that she is really into Riverdale. So much so that when she went to audition for the role of Sabrina, she had to hide how much of a fan she was. It didn’t help that she binge-watched the whole series right before going to audition for Sabrina. Thankfully she was able to keep her fangirl in check and go on to land the role.
… and she would be up for a Riverdale/Sabrina crossover
Fans of both shows know that Riverdale and Sabrina take place in the same universe. So it’s only natural for fans to want a crossover. And Shipka thinks it’s a good idea too. She told Kelly and Ryan during a recent interview that the towns are so close to each other that it only makes sense that they would know about the crazy things their neighbors are up to.
She’s allergic to cats (and she didn’t find out until she started shooting Sabrina)
Shipka found out the hard way about her allergy to cats. It was during the filming of Sabrina that she realized she had an allergy. The problem is, one of the show’s major cast members is a cat. Shipka told Seth Myers that one day she was cuddling up with her furry co-star and the next day she was covered in hives. She says it was so bad that there are scenes where she can tell that she had some Benadryl before shooting. She jokes, “[he’s] one of the few actors that I have not gotten along with.”
She had her own billboard in Time Square
Visit the star’s Instagram account, and you will find a selfie of the star in Time Square. Behind her is a digital billboard featuring Shipka in her new role in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The star gets a kick out of seeing herself up on the building — she captioned the image “Life is weird and amazing.”
She feels Sabrina is inspiring
In an interview with Seventeen, Shipka told the magazine that she gravitates towards feminist content, that’s one of the reasons she was so excited about the show. She says she loves that her character is so strong-willed and a girl that can inspire others.
Her hair wasn’t blonde (or short) when she got the role of Sabrina
Fans have always known the actress as a blonde. But she told Seventeen that just before landing the role of Sabrina she actually had long dark hair. When she got the role of Sabrina, she had to chop it off and return to blonde. She says, “No Complaints! I’m down for anything, but I actually want my hair to be brown or red.”
She considers herself an introvert
Though she loves going out and talking to others, Shipka says she recharges by getting some alone time. Self-care is important to her, and she makes sure to do things that help her take her mind off of things. The actress says she loves reading and watching a movie or TV. She also makes sure to get enough sleep.
