Kim Cattrall Took a Hiatus from TV After ‘Sex and the City’ Surprising Reasons

For years, Kim Cattrall portrayed one of the most popular characters on the iconic TV show Sex and the City. In spite of how much fans love her, Cattrall stepped away from the character amidst a storm of controversy and rumors about behind-the-scenes fighting between co-stars.

For the past several years, she’s been away from the spotlight, working on smaller projects that interest her. Still, Cattrall recently announced a big return to television that has her fans incredibly excited.

How did Kim Cattrall become famous?

Cattrall was born in England in 1956. She studied acting in school and when she was only sixteen years old, she moved to New York City in order to pursue a career in the entertainment business.

Cattrall started appearing in movies in the seventies, with early roles in films such as Rosebud and The Rebels. She also had parts in several popular TV shows including Columbo, opposite Peter Falk.

Cattrall continued to be a popular presence onscreen well into the eighties, even proving her versatility by working in comedy movies like Porky’s and Police Academy. She also developed a thriving career as a stage actress and has performed the works of Arthur Miller, Anton Chekhov, and Rupert Brooks.

Although Cattrall was a successful actress and worked steadily, she likely would have been in danger of fading quietly away, if not for an HBO show that came calling in the mid-nineties.

Kim Cattrall was a star on ‘Sex and the City’

In 1997, Cattrall was cast as Samantha Jones in HBO’s Sex and the City. The role called for an actress who would able to portray a steamy, hyper-sexed New Yorker who had built a thriving career in a male-dominated industry and Cattrall was a perfect choice.

Playing opposite the other lead actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, Cattrall captivated audiences everywhere. Cattrall earned serious critical acclaim for her work in Sex and the City and was nominated for a slew of awards, including five Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards.

She went on to appear on all six seasons of the show, right up until the series ended in 2004. Cattrall reprised the role of Samantha Jones in 2008 in the Sex and the City movie and then again in 2010, in Sex and the City 2.

As beloved as the show is, there is a bitter note to the Sex and the City story, with numerous reports claiming that Cattrall and co-star Sarah Jessica Parker are embroiled in a long-running feud. Cattrall even called Parker “cruel” in 2018, and fans resigned themselves to the fact that the two would likely never again reunite onscreen.

After ending her tenure on Sex and the City, where she became one of the world’s most beloved actresses, Cattrall worked on a variety of smaller projects in the film industry but focused the majority of her attention on the stage. Cattrall recently opened up about why she decided to step away from television opportunities.

“I was having a lot of questions about mid-life crisis, about menopause, about what now, what is the next chapter of my life.” She revealed that the 2014 TV series Sensitive Skin helped her decide to turn her attention back to television.

As a result, Cattrall will soon be making her highly-anticipated return to the small screen, in a series called Filthy Rich. At the age of 63, Cattrall is still exploring new roles and new ways of connecting with her audience — and there’s no doubt that her many fans are eagerly awaiting her new series.
