Kim Kardashian Accused of Cultural Appropriation Again
Members of the Kardashian-Jenner family are no strangers to controversy. That is especially true for Kim Kardashian West, beauty and fashion mogul, mother of four, and front-runner of the Keeping Up With the Kardashians series. The reality star was recently in hot water again for cultural appropriation.
Kim Kardashian West’s past with cultural appropriation
Forever in the spotlight, Kardashian West has been criticized for cultural appropriation many times in the past. Before the launch of her shape-wear line, Kardashian West received backlash from the mayor of Japan about using “Kimono” as the name of her new endeavor. Upset that anyone would think she was using “kimono” out of malice, Kardashian West rebranded the line to SKIMS and formally apologized for offending anyone.
After that, Kardashian West appeared several shades tanner in a cover shoot for 7HOLLYWOOD. The public accused her of “blackfishing,” or changing her appearance to give the impression of African American heritage. Kardashian West blamed the lighting and her Armenian heritage for appearing darker in the photos.
The criticism continued pouring in for Kardashian West , who often promotes her KKW Beauty line on social media. She was once again criticized in the public eye after promoting the KKW Beauty products she uses to darken her skin intentionally.
Yeezy Season 8 at Paris Fashion Week
During Paris Fashion Week, Kanye West debuted Yeezy Season 8. The rapper’s latest release featured a parachute entrance and performance by his daughter, North West.
Excited for her husband’s most recent collection, Kardashian West took to social media to share photos from the event. The SKIMS shapewear creator was pictured wearing a Yeezy outfit as well as a full head of waist-length braids. 6-year-old West and her cousin, Penelope Disick were also seen sporting the braids.
This isn’t the first time Kardashian West has worn the controversial hairstyle. In the past, she was photographed on red carpets with cornrows. She has also posted photos to her social media showcasing the historically black hairstyle.
Fans express their disappointment in Kim Kardashian West
Once again, many people were disappointed in Kardashian West’s choice and they weren’t afraid to speak out about it. The reactions came pouring in on social media, with one user posting “YOU 👏 ARE 👏 NOT 👏 BLACK 👏” and another pointing out “How does she keep getting away with it.”
Not everyone had a problem with Kardashian West’s hairstyle choice, though. Many fans of the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star came to her defense. One Twitter user said:
It’s 2020 we know it’s y’all culture. It’s a badass hairstyle and you don’t control the hands that braid it. On top of that, this is only an American issue. No one on earth besides African Americans deem this cultural appropriation.Twitter User @MajaC95
Kardashian West has yet to make a statement about the backlash surrounding her hairstyle during Paris Fashion Week. However, in a 2018 interview with Bustle, she explained that she wears the braids to honor and respect the culture that originated the hairstyle, saying, “In no way am I ever trying to disrespect anyone’s culture by wearing braids.”
In the past, Kardashian West has used the show as a platform to shed light on the accusations of her cultural appropriation. There may be a formal apology in the upcoming season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, but it’s not likely considering Kardashian has expressed in the past that she is never trying to intentionally offend anyone through her personal style choices.
