Kim Kardashian Responds to The Kimono Shapewear Backlash

Kim Kardashian West recently announced a shapewear and lingerie line that she’s officially debuting later this summer–it was called Kimono. Almost immediately after Kardashian West’s announcement, she began to receive accusations of cultural appropriation.  

“Finally I can share with you guys this project that I have been developing for the last year,” she wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “I’ve been passionate about this for 15 years. Kimono is my take on shapewear and solutions for women that actually work.”

The idea for Kimono came to Kardashian West when she realized she couldn’t find the right kind of shapewear to fit her needs.  

“I would always cut up my shapewear to make my own styles, and there have also been so many times I couldn’t find a shapewear color that blended with my skin tone so we needed a solution for all of this,” she said.

The collection consists of a wide variety of shapewear and underwear styles retailing from $22 to $98. The sizes range from XXS to 4XL and come in nine different tonal colors at launch, with more shades promised as the company grows. 

A lot of people are offended by Kim Kardashian West’s use of the word ‘Kimono’

Several people took to social sites to criticize Kardashian West’s use of the word “kimono,” which is a traditional Japanese garment.

“After making millions of dollars from the appropriation of Black Culture, @KimKardashian has taken to disrespecting Japanese culture by attempting to trademark the word “kimono”. Please, reframe from taking things that do not belong to you.  #KimOhNo #kimono,” one person wrote on Twitter.  

“She has been appropriating black culture for so long but so many people defended her saying she is not making profit from it and it is not appropriation but appreciation. Now she is blatantly trying to make monetary profit by selling and trademarking Kimono. #KimOhNo,” wrote another person. 

“Please stop using the word KIMONO for your underwear line. KIMONO is for all who understand it, not for U who do cultural appropriation. @KimKardashian  #KimOhNo,” tweets another. 

“So many words in the world and you had to pick kimono,” another user added.

On Thursday, Kardashian West gave a statement to The New York Times to touch on how she selected the name for her brand. She said the name was meant to be “a nod to the beauty and detail that goes into a garment.” She has no plans “to design or release any garments that would in any way resemble or dishonor the traditional garment,” and, at the time, she said she had no plans to change the brand’s name in response to the criticism. 

“I understand and have deep respect for the significance of the kimono in Japanese culture,” she said in her statement. “My solutionwear brand is built with inclusivity and diversity at its core and I’m incredibly proud of what’s to come.”

But after considering the criticism she received, Kardashian West has decided to change the name of her brand. 

“My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core and after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name. I will be in touch soon. Thank you for your understanding and support always,” she wrote on Twitter.
