Kim Kardashian West’s Birthday Backlash Somehow Includes Jameela Jamil & We’re So Confused
In case you somehow missed it, Kim Kardashian West recently celebrated her 40th birthday. And while most people are wisely keeping parties pretty lowkey in 2020, the skims owner wasn’t about to let a global pandemic stop her from partying. Since the KarJenner clan has largely returned to business as usual despite the rising number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, people expected Kardashian West to throw a soirée of some kind. But, that didn’t stop her from receiving tons of criticism.
On October 27, 2020, Kardashian West took to her Twitter page to let her fans know how she celebrated her 40th birthday. “After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.”

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star went on to share how she and her loved ones spent their time on the island. “We danced, rode bikes, swam near whales, kayaked, watched a movie on the beach and so much more,” Kardashian West penned. “I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is. #thisis40”
Naturally, many people were not impressed with Kardashian West’s tweets. They accused her of being tone-deaf and flaunting her wealth at a time where most people are experiencing a severe economic crisis. A number of people added that the KarJenners were truly incapable of reading the room and couldn’t understand why Kardashian West couldn’t keep her birthday celebrations to herself.
Jameela Jamil joins the conversation on Twitter
But, Kardashian West wasn’t the only celebrity to catch heat for her birthday celebration. Not long after the 40-year-old tweeted, Jameela Jamil chimed in, declaring that people were criticizing her for Kardashian’s tweets. This, of course, caused The Good Place alum to chime in with tweets of her own.
“Ahaha this is hilarious,” Jamil penned. “You’re all blaming me for Kim [Kardashian West] acknowledging her privilege. It’s not my fault. YOU ALL DID THIS. You screamed at everyone to acknowledge their privilege and now people are, you’re calling it bragging. So you’re just gonna have to decide what you want!”
Jamil has been vocal about Kardashian West and her sisters before
Jamil concluded by saying she didn’t know how or why she got “dragged into” the backlash about Kardashian West’s birthday party. Of course, this isn’t the first time that Jamil has had something to say about the KarJenners. She has been known to call the sisters out for using their influence to promote problematic products such as flat tummy teas.
Do celebrities need to log off more in 2020?
But it seems that Jamil could’ve sat this one out. According to a Twitter user, only five people even made mentioned the actor in reference to Kardashian West’s birthday backlash before The Good Place alum chose to respond, four of which didn’t even tag her. While Jamil is obviously entitled to defend herself, this could’ve been an instance where the actor simply ignored anyone who was foolishly blaming her for Kardashian West’s actions. In fact, if both women had simply chosen to log off, we wouldn’t even be writing this article.
