Kim Kardashian West Says Memes About Her 2013 Met Gala Dress Made Her Cry ‘the Whole Way Home’
Kim Kardashian West says memes created in response to one of her most memorable looks, the floral gown she wore to the 2013 Met Gala while pregnant with her and Kanye West’s first child, North, 6, had her in tears “the whole way home” following the event.
Kardashian West wore a floor-length gown by designer Riccardo Tisci, who at the time worked for Givenchy. Tisci dressed Kanye for the event and also came up with a special look for Kardashian West, who went by Kim Kardashian at the time.
In a YouTube video for Vogue published on Nov. 22, 2019, the 39-year-old mother of four reflected on 21 of her best — and worst — looks including the infamous floral gown.

Kardashian West ‘couldn’t believe’ all the memes
When it came to the 2013 Met Gala, Kardashian West recalled being excited on the way to the event.
“On the car ride there, I remember Kanye saying, ‘You look so beautiful, I’m so happy for you,’” she said.
After the Met Gala, her feelings changed.
“And then I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it,” Kardashian West remembered. “There were all these memes about me and this couch, and I think Robin Williams even tweeted it, said I looked like Mrs. Doubtfire.”
“I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it,” she added.
She remembers being ‘very pregnant, very puffy, and bloated’
Kardashian West recalled the circumstances of the event saying that she didn’t actually get invited herself but came as a guest of Kanye’s.
“Kanye [West] was performing so I wasn’t actually invited, I was just Kanye’s plus one. And that was okay with me because I never really dreamed I would be at the Met Ball,” she said, adding, “I know no one really probably wanted me there at the time.”
She felt that the circumstances weren’t exactly what she wanted for her debut at the Met Gala.
“I was very pregnant, very puffy and bloated and I was like, ‘Oh god, of course the first time I go I’m gonna be huge,” she added. Kardashian West gave birth to North a little more than a month later on June 15, 2013.
Kardashian West wanted to wear black
Because of her pregnancy, they choose a fabric that could accommodate Kardashian West’s growing baby bump at the time, which meant “alterations were easy,” she said noting that there were initially two versions of the dress: one black and one floral.
She also said she had been leaning toward the black gown and told the designer so.
“I was like, ‘I think I should just do the black version,’ and Riccardo was like, ‘No, c’mon, we have to do the floral,’” she recalled, adding that Tisci later let her in on the sweet reasoning behind why he wanted her to wear the floral gown. “Riccardo said afterwards, ‘What do you give a woman who is pregnant? You send her flowers.’”
Ultimately, Kardashian West wore the floral gown after Tisci told her Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, who co-chairs the Met Gala, preferred the floral option.
“I could never really speak up at that point because I so shy and just wanted to make everybody happy,” Kardashian West said.
Today, Kardashian West loves the divisive floral gown.
“Now I love it,” she said. “I look back and I’m like, ‘Wow, they had the vision. This is sick.’ I just remember the Olsen twins came up to me and loved my outfit and my gloves, so none of the critics mattered because the Olsen twins approved.”
