Kit Harington on Discovering His Fate in Season 8 of ‘Game of Thrones’
Kit Harington has been playing Jon Snow since Game of Thrones premiered back in 2011. Now, with nearly a decade of experience portraying the beloved son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, he and his fellow HBO cast members must bid farewell to the characters they have become one with.
Kit Harington was a virtual unknown, at least to an American demographic, until HBO came knocking on his door. Thus, the actor has the show to thank for kickstarting his career in Hollywood. Jon Snow is one of the characters who viewers (and readers of the George R.R. Martin novels) are exceedingly – to an almost unhealthy extent – infatuated with.
From his individual narrative arc to the relationship he shares with Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, and more, the character is at the core of the show’s success, and one of its main appeals. So, his final fate is one that has many viewers on the edge of their seats. Just how exactly will Jon Snow’s story end? Where will he wind up, and will viewers be satisfied?
Kit Harington sat down with Esquire to discuss his time spent on Game of Thrones, the relationships he has developed, and will continue to cherish, with his castmates, as well as what it was like reading his season eight script.
Considering the table read was a tear-inducing experience for many actors involved, it may be wise to prepare yourself for one emotionally draining experience come April 14.
Kit Harington on finding out Jon Snow’s fate in Game of Thrones
During his interview with Esquire, Kit Harington was asked how he and the other cast members found out about their fates in season eight. Harington replied:
“They just sent us the scripts and we all read them. I didn’t read them until I got to the table read, ’cause I wanted just to listen to it. I thought, There’s no point in reading it when I can hear the actual actors speaking out loud. So yeah, that was the first time we knew what was happening this season and the fates of our characters. I think it hit everyone very personally around that table when a character didn’t make it. There was a kind of tear in people’s eyes, and we’d look up at the other actors and be like [mimes a salute] for, you know, whoever it was that had gone.”Esquire
Since Game of Thrones is known for killing off its main characters without batting an eyelash, who Kit Harington is referring to above remains to be seen; however, it’s more than likely that a few more characters fans have come to know and love will bite the dust by the time the series finale rolls around.
Kit Harington believes it’s time for ‘Game of Thrones’ to end
Kit Harington goes on to explain that he knows the show has reached its high point, and that it’s time for the series to come to an end. Harington tells the interviewer,“we’ve gone through as many variations of people as we can. The show’s gotten as big as it can. The in-house jokes that go around are getting slightly tired now. We need to end.”
While fans will be sad to see the show go, Kit Harington’s words reflect one facet of the show that will be remembered forever: it ended before fans were no longer watching. The show will end on a high note, and that is always the best way to conclude a series. So, as you prepare for the end of Game of Thrones, continue watching your favorite clips on replay and be sure to watch the actors interview if you want to discover a spoiler (you never know who might slip).
